Salary: $17.00 - $30.00 Hourly

The Coney Island YMCA is seeking a Youth Coach who will be responsible for leading a group or team of children/teens in a designated sport and progressive skill development for the Teen Center: Saturday Night Lights Teen program. The Youth Coach will promote the enjoyment of sports activities while improving physical competence, developing confidence, teaching healthy competition, and skill development. 

Teen Center: Saturday Night Lights Teen program operates on Saturday evenings.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience coaching children/teens sports in a structured setting.
  • Content expert in designated sport(s).
  • Coaching license in the respective sport preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of sporting strategies.
  • Current First Aid / CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of youth development stages.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.
  • Good Communication and Interpersonal skills.
  • Must be available to work Saturday evenings.
Essential Functions
  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of participants in the program by providing close supervision of all activities, and ensuring spaces are clean and supplies are well-maintained.
  • Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces the diversity of all participants.
  • Work with the Supervisor to develop program objectives, goals, and logistics.
  • Schedule team practices and games during Saturday Night Lights Teen Center hours in collaboration with Teen Advisors.
  • Create written plans for all practices that are age-appropriate and progressive. 
  • Provide supervision of the players to ensure safety and engagement.
  • Modify and adapt coaching style to meet the needs of the participants.
  • Teach rules, fundamentals, and enhance basic skills. Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship over winning and the outcome of the game.
  • Encourage a lifetime of participation in sports and physical activity.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding schedules, registration, and the progress of their child/teen.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about additional YMCA opportunities that can benefit them and/or their child/teen.
  • Ensure that all equipment is age-appropriate, safe, and in proper working condition. This includes conducting scheduled equipment safety checks.
  • Work with the Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts.
  • When applicable, provide direction to volunteers or Teen Advisors who support the program.
  • Inform the Manager on Duty (MOD) regarding any incident reports that need to be filled out.
  • Keep a safe and clean activity space.
  • Adhere to all Saturday Night Lights funding expectations and requirements.
  • Must obtain the YMCA Coaching 101 Training certificate within 90 days of hire.
  • Must obtain the CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within 30 days of hire.
  • Must obtain the Child Abuse Prevention Training certificate within 30 days of hire.
  • Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events, as appropriate.
