The Lead Maintenance Technician supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This position ensures that facilities, grounds, vehicles, and equipment are maintained in a safe, efficient, and high-quality manner.

The role provides day-to-day leadership and oversight of the maintenance team, including assigning work, setting priorities, and evaluating performance. The Lead Maintenance Technician is also responsible for planning and managing preventive maintenance programs, coordinating vendors and contracts, supporting budget development, and ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards, while working independently and exercising discretion and judgment in decision-making, resource allocation, and project coordination.

Qualifications
  • Associate degree in facilities management, construction management, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience accepted.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive maintenance experience, including 2 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage projects, and make independent decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building systems, as well as preventive maintenance scheduling.
  • Proficiency in maintenance management software and budgeting tools.
  • Must obtain/maintain relevant certifications (CPO, CPR/First Aid/AED, OSHA safety).

Essential Functions

Leadership & Supervision

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of maintenance staff across multiple facilities or program areas.
  • Assign, inspect, and evaluate work performed by maintenance technicians, providing coaching, feedback, and performance input.
  • Participate in the hiring, scheduling, and training of maintenance employees; ensure appropriate staffing levels.
  • Develop and manage vendor and contractor relationships, including reviewing bids and approving work.
  • Exercise discretion in prioritizing maintenance projects and allocating resources within approved budgets.

Building, Systems, and Equipment Oversight

  • Plan and manage preventive maintenance and general repairs on building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and fitness equipment.
  • Oversee pool and hydrotherapy systems to maintain compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Monitor maintenance management systems, ensuring work orders are completed efficiently and documentation is current.
  • Provide technical expertise for long-range maintenance planning and capital improvement projects.

Budgeting and Strategic Planning

  • Assist the Maintenance Director with annual budgeting, forecasting, and capital planning.
  • Review and approve supply orders, repair expenditures, and vendor invoices within delegated authority.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance costs and identify opportunities for operational efficiencies.

Risk Management and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with YMCA, OSHA, DHEC, and other regulatory standards.
  • Lead safety audits, inspections, and corrective action planning.
  • Promote a culture of safety among maintenance staff and facility users.

Member and Staff Engagement

  • Support branch operations by responding promptly to facility concerns with professionalism and care.
  • Model YMCA values and foster a positive, inclusive work environment among staff and members.

Other Expectations

  • Support YMCA philanthropy efforts by sharing the Y story, participating in branch campaigns, and assisting with special events.
  • Adhere to YMCA abuse prevention policies, boundary guidelines, and risk management protocols.
  • Attend required training sessions and certifications as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the YMCA mission and operations.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
    • Maintenance Employees-ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker-rooms and bathrooms), etc.
  • Follow employees and volunteers screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with consumers.
  • Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
  • Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures.
  • Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Communicate to all employees and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect their consumer from abuse.
  • Report essential abuse risk management information to the board of directors.
