Job Description

As the Aquatics Director, you will be responsible for effectively operating and implementing all elements concerning the aquatics department at the assigned location(s). Responsibilities include but are not limited to program operation, program development and growth, participant satisfaction, participant and member retention and safety, community collaborations, and staff supervision. You will be accountable for delivering exceptional and outstanding programs and services to YMCA members and participants. The Aquatics Director is a vital member of the YMCA leadership staff and a highly visible representative of the YMCA mission and core values. They are accountable for knowing and properly executing all YMCA policies and procedures.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree is required. Degree in human services, social services, business, or equivalent is preferred.
  • Five years equivalent education and/or experience in similar role will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Two or more years of management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency.
  • Team Leader certification is preferred or obtained within two years from the hire date.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications are required within 30 days of hire.
  • Lifeguard Certification is required within 30 days of hire.
  • Lifeguard Instructor certification is preferred or obtained within six months from hire date. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to perform all necessary rescue and survival skills and all lifeguard prerequisite skills.
  • Able to communicate verbally with good voice projection and clarity.
  • Ability to direct department operations through volunteer development, supervision of staff, development, and monitoring of branch budget, marketing and public relations, and program development.

Essential Functions

  • Contributes to the overall Y mission of strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
  • Interacts professionally with other employees, members, program participants, volunteers, and the community while always modeling the YMCA's voice and core values.
  • Develops, coordinates, markets, and evaluates all aquatics offerings and services.
  • Performs quality work within given deadlines and expectations with or without direct supervision.
  • Leads the hiring, training, scheduling and supervision of staff within the aquatics department.
  • Serves as lifeguard and/or swim instructor as needed.
  • Manages staff according to the department's budget. Any overtime must be pre-approved.
  • Organizes and conducts aquatics staff meetings as needed.
  • Continually communicates with and informs staff about YMCA programs and current issues.
  • Defines department targets and evaluates performance around achieving goals while motivating staff.
  • Implements the Association's risk management program to ensure safe facilities and programs for members, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ensures emergency preparedness through the regular execution of emergency drills and department assessments.
  • Ensures and tracks that all staff maintain required certifications and are aware of the expiration dates of their current certifications in collaboration with Human Resources department.
  • Monitors necessary equipment purchases and ensure preventative equipment maintenance on a routine basis.
  • Develops and manages annual department budget.Submits monthly variance reports and accurate budget forecasts.
  • Ensures programs operate within budget and established standards.
  • Continuously displays effective and efficient fiscal management.
  • Attends, actively participates in and assists with all required staff training, meetings, and program development activities.
  • Supports the strategic direction of the Association, appropriate committees, and work groups.
  • Performs office work as needed, such as filing, copying, record keeping, and payroll completion.Ensures that all necessary paperwork and forms are accurately completed.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with key partners and other collaborative organizations and agencies related to the portfolio.Responds to all participant and community inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Develops committed relationships by sharing knowledge of programs, events, and resources with members and participants throughout the facility and within the community when representing the YMCA.
  • Works and collaborates with the Center Executive Director as active member of the Center Leadership Team including, but not limited to, serving as Leader on Duty, participating in Annual Campaign, and supporting daily operations.
  • Performs other duties as required by the Aquatics Senior Program Director.
