POSITION SUMMARY: 

Reporting directly to the Chief People Officer (CPO), the Associate Vice President of People Experience is a pivotal leader on the People Team, working in close partnership with the Associate Vice President of People Operations. This strategic and hands-on leader is responsible for shaping and executing a comprehensive people strategy that supports the full employee life cycle from recruitment and onboarding to development, recognition, and retention. 

With direct oversight of two Association Directors and their respective teams, this role encompasses Talent Management, Employee Relations, Learning and Leadership Development, and Recognition. The Associate Vice President of People Experience is expected to lead with both vision and action, inspiring a high-performing people team while cultivating an employee experience that advances the YMCA’s mission and values. This growth-minded leader will play a critical role in shaping a people-first culture that attracts, engages, and retains top talent across the Association.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, organizational development, human resources, or a related field is required; advanced degree or equivalent experience is a plus.
  • 8+years of progressively responsible senior leadership experience in all facets of Human Resources, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role overseeing multiple HR functions.
  • Demonstrated success in people strategy, leadership development, employee engagement, and/or organizational culture work.
  • Knowledge of employment law, compliance standards, and HR best practices.
  • Experience in a non-profit setting is preferred.
  • Cultivates and actively promotes caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all interactions.
  • Solid business acumen and a strategic mindset, with a keen understanding of business imperatives and organizational priorities. Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and manage complex budgets, evaluate financial performance, and take proactive, decisive action to drive results and ensure financial sustainability.
  • Proven ability to develop, lead, and motivate staff, volunteers, and cross-functional teams while fostering a collaborative and engaging work environment.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills—both written and verbal—including the ability to deliver compelling presentations and engage audiences in person and through virtual platforms.
  • Strong leadership, persuasion, and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence and guide key stakeholders including experience advising senior executives.
  • Senior professional certifications with SHRM or HRCI are highly valued. 
  • Significant experience in areas related to child protection, incident management, Workers’ Compensation, background checks, and the safety of children and program participants is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability and capacity to address and resolve employee conflicts collaboratively and work toward/find equitable solutions.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Vision and Strategy

  • Collaborates with the CPO to shape and drive culture strategy across the organization, ensuring that talent acquisition strategies, policies and procedures, recognition programs and leadership development plans are fully aligned with the YMCA’s desired culture and values.
  • Leverages data from stay and exit interviews and employee surveys to identify patterns, recurring themes, or areas for improvement, translating insights into actionable initiatives.
  • Works closely with the Associate Vice President of People Operations to ensure benefits and compensation strategies enrich our employee’s experience.
  • Works side by side with the Chief People Officer and the Chief Partnership and Impact Officer to ensure that all strategies and programs are developed with a comprehensive lens of welcoming and belonging, fostering a workplace that reflects these core values
  • Continuously evaluates the competitiveness of people-related programs and practices, comparing them with other similar organizations and local markets to ensure the YMCA remains an employer of choice, capable of attracting and retaining top talent. 

People Experience

  • Provides leadership, and direction to the Association Director of Human Resources who, together with a team of People Partners and Sr. Director of Talent Acquisition, works to develop and implement strategies to attract and retain key talent across the entire Association while also focusing on ensuring education, understanding and compliance with employment laws, regulations, and Association policies that will strengthen the culture of the YMCA of the Triangle.  
  • Serves as a resource to the Association Director of Human Resources regarding complex employee relations issues and collaborates with legal counsel to ensure appropriate, compliant actions are taken. Promotes a culture of engagement and partnership in understanding employment law, risk mitigation, and compliance with policies, programs, and regulations.
  • Supports the Association Director of Human Resources in leading the Human Resources Talent Acquisition team to develop strategies that attract and retain high-quality, diverse talent for branches, overnight camps, and support departments.
  • Works with the Employee Experience Team to develop, implement, and enhance systems to ensure fair and consistent employment practices across the Association. 
  • Works with HR team and leaders across the Association to re-imagine and implement innovative rewards and recognition systems.
  • Ensures strong collaboration with the Operational Risk department to address issues involving staff and members/participants, ensuring that all actions are compliant with necessary safety measures.

Learning and Leadership Development

  • Provides oversight and direction to the Association Director of Learning and Leadership Development in defining and executing strategies that ensure the YMCA of the Triangle engages, develops and rewards a diverse, talented and engaged workforce of purpose-driven leaders.  
  • Develops and implements a forward-thinking learning and leadership development strategy that supports the organization’s growth, transformation goals and diversity of part-time and full-time workforce.
  • Align learning and development programs with business objectives, ensuring measurable outcomes and return on investment.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices, integrating innovative approaches to enhance learning and leadership initiatives.
  • Supports the YMCA of the Carolina’s Learning Center, a Y of the USA model, that seeks to cultivate and nurture strong and effective relationships with CEOs, State Alliances, Y Leaders and other key stakeholders across 7 different states and deliver needed training to Ys in NC and SC.
  • Supports the Learning and Leadership Development team in delivering comprehensive learning and leadership programs that seek to provide learning and growth opportunities to staff across the Association.  
  • Serves as a resource to the LLD department and ensures that the department’s work aligns with the Association’s strategic goals and drives strong employee engagement.
