POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Associate Vice President of People Experience, the Association Director of HR | People Services serves as a key strategic leader overseeing core HR function across the employee life cycle. This role drives consistency, compliance, and culture by leading the YMCA of the Triangle’s talent acquisition strategy, employee relations approach, onboarding and offboarding practices, and HR policy implementation. The Director provides direct leadership to the HR Generalist and Talent teams, ensuring HR programs advance the organization’s mission, values, and operational priorities.

 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred with 3-5 years employee relations, hiring/onboarding experience and talent management experience.
  • Experience leading and developing high performing teams in a dynamic and evolving environment.
  • PHR or SHRM-CP or other HR Certification preferred.
  • Working knowledge of applicant tracking systems and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • A demonstrated working knowledge of Employment Law (EEO, ADA, etc).
  • Strong consultative, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and focus in an ambiguous environment and handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and maturity.  
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Ability to multi-task and complete large volumes of projects and tasks.
  • Multi-lingual desired but not required.
     
Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Leads and executes enterprise-wide recruitment strategy for full-time and part-time roles, building a strong, diverse talent pipeline in alignment with workforce planning. Provide strategic guidance to branch leaders and ensure excellence in candidate experience and hiring outcomes.
  • Develops and coaches a high-performing HR team, including People Partners and Senior Director of Recruitment, to deliver responsive, compliant, and mission-aligned HR support across the Association’s branches, camps, and programs.
  • Ensures ongoing compliance with all applicable employment laws and internal policies. Proactively assess risks, recommend updates, and drive a culture of accountability and continuous improvement across HR practices.
  • Serves as the lead advisor and escalation point for complex employee relations matters, including investigations, disciplinary actions, and conflict resolution. Partner with leaders to foster a positive and legally sound workplace culture.
  • Oversees onboarding and offboarding processes, ensuring consistency, compliance, and an engaging employee experience from hire to exit.
  • Advises senior and executive leaders on HR policy implementation, employment decisions, organizational design, and workforce structure in alignment with strategic goals.
  • Supports and guides hiring managers in executing peak season recruitment with speed and compliance, particularly during summer and seasonal staff surges.
  • Designs and facilitates HR training across the Association on key topics such as legal compliance, hiring standards, and effective people management.
     
Required Certifications
