Why Your Role Matters
As the Senior Director of Youth Development (Out of School Time and Camp Programs), you are accountable for the organization, delivery, and overall quality of YMCA afterschool and camp programs. You build and maintain strong relationships with principals, parents, part-time staff, and program participants to foster trust and engagement. You ensure consistent and effective curriculum delivery, oversee staff hiring and training, and actively monitor and improve program quality. Through collaboration with internal teams and external partners, you promote YMCA programs, strengthen community connections, and help advance shared goals that support youth growth and development.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university is required. A focus on recreation management, education, child development, or a related field is preferred.
2+ years of Youth Development professional experience, including staff management, required. YMCA experience preferred.
- The position requires Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) (formerly overseen by TDFPS) Program Director certification. Must be or have the ability to become certified according to HHSC standards.
Current CPR and First Aid certification, or become certified upon hire
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred
- Demonstrated maturity and leadership skills
- Experience or aptitude in supervising employees
- Strong communication and computer skills
- Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to meet deadlines
- Computer aptitude and/or experience, and have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of members, participants, or employees of the Association

Essential Functions
- Provide direct supervision and leadership to a team of full-time Program Directors, ensuring they are equipped to effectively manage staff and deliver high-quality, mission-driven programming.
- Drive staff development by implementing systems that support continuous growth, performance feedback, and accountability, while upholding YMCA policies and state licensing standards.
- Monitor and address escalated performance issues with professionalism, consistency, and adherence to organizational values and compliance guidelines.
- Establish and maintain robust systems for program quality control, performance measurement, and adherence to safety and operational standards across all sites.
- Foster an inclusive and respectful work culture grounded in trust, collaboration, and accountability. Address conflict constructively and promptly, ensuring clarity in expectations and alignment with team and organizational goals.
- Model inclusive leadership, valuing diverse perspectives, and fostering a culture of belonging, equity, and mutual respect across all team interactions.
- Lead all aspects of talent management for direct reports, including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, performance coaching, and career development, ensuring alignment with the YMCA’s people practices.
- Ensure alignment with the YMCA’s strategic plan by driving progress on key performance indicators (KPIs), department goals, and organizational objectives.
- Apply a goal-based leadership approach to ensure that all programs and staff are contributing meaningfully toward broader organizational priorities and results.
- Conduct regular check-ins with direct reports to monitor progress, provide feedback, offer coaching, and identify professional development opportunities.
- Oversee daily operations at multiple childcare sites, ensuring excellence in curriculum delivery, safety practices, and compliance with state and local regulations as well as YMCA policies.
- Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of programs, identify areas for improvement, and support staff in achieving excellence in program delivery and participant engagement.
- Troubleshoot and resolve operational challenges related to staffing, children, schools, or parent interactions; escalate when necessary, ensuring appropriate follow-up and documentation.
- Ensure all team members understand and adhere to the Texas Department of Health and Human Services' minimum standards and other regulatory and quality expectations.
- Maintain timely, accurate, and complete documentation and reports related to program operations and compliance.
- Uphold and model proactive adherence to policies and procedures, with a consistent focus on child safety and high-quality care.
- Lead planning and coordination of field trips and enrichment activities for Summer Camp, including researching, scheduling, and communicating trip logistics.
- Guide the strategic planning and implementation of seasonal programs, including Winter Holiday Camp, Spring Break Camp, and Summer Camp.
- Participate in staff recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, and training to ensure new hires are well-integrated and supported from day one.
- Actively mentor and develop staff, identifying opportunities for ongoing training, engagement, and retention.
- Engage in continuous professional development through participation in staff meetings, pre-service training, and a minimum of 15 hours of additional training throughout the school year.
- Collaborate with leadership and finance teams to manage program budgets effectively, ensuring programs meet enrollment targets and stay within budget parameters.
- Serve as a professional ambassador of the Greater Austin YMCA by building and maintaining strong, positive relationships with principals, parents, staff, licensing representatives, and community partners.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
