Job Description

Under the direction of the Chief People and Culture Officer (CPCO) and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the VP, People is responsible for directing people functions within human resources and compensation and benefits departments. This position is responsible for setting and executing the overall strategic direction for human resources, culture, compensation, and benefits. The VP, People will initiate discussions of strategic human resources issues and provide leadership for association-wide strategic initiatives. This role will partner closely with senior cabinet, regional, and center leaders and managers to advance the YMCA’s goals through effective people systems, policies, and practices.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Four-year degree in business, with emphasis (or related experience) in Human Resource management.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive Human Resource management experience, including experience leading a team of exempt HR leaders, benefits, payroll, and compensation.
  • Deep knowledge of Human Resource fundamentals including compliance, employee relations, benefits, payroll, and compensation.
  • Excellent process orientation and experience providing leadership of improvement plans in the areas of human resources and benefits.
  • Strong skills in change management to support culture and process change.
  • Demonstrated experience diagnosing and resolving organizational issues.
  • Effectively present on controversial or complex topics to employee groups, management, and occasionally to the Board.
  • Experience with multi-location entities.
  • Skillset to influence without authority.
  • All YMCA team members are expected to maintain a current and active status for all safety, risk, and programming certifications defined by the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. 

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Human Resources Certification.
  • Demonstrated success leading an HR team in a multi-site or decentralized organization.
Essential Functions

1. Strategic Leadership

  • Align HR, compensation, and benefits with organizational goals and values.
  • Drive people strategies that support the mission, culture, and long-term sustainability.
  • Foster an inclusive, equitable workplace culture, policies, and practices.
  • Establish metrics and analytics to assess workforce trends, turnover, and engagement for data-driven decision-making.

2. HR Operations and Compliance

  • Develop and manage fair, market-competitive HR, compensation, and benefits policies.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory employment requirements.
  • Monitor legislative changes and ensure timely communication and compliance.
  • Oversee sensitive HR matters with leaders, staff, and legal counsel, where applicable, to maintain confidentiality.

3. People-Centric Practices and Leadership

  • Maintain efficient, people-focused HR processes and systems.
  • Benchmark and implement effective, industry-leading people programs.
  • Lead and mentor the HR team, promoting a high-performance, collaborative environment.

4. Continuous Improvement

  • Analyze HR metrics, identify trends, and provide actionable insights to senior leadership.
  • Drive process improvements in HR systems and operations to enhance efficiency and team member experience.
  • Ensure HR policies and practices reflect consistency, fairness, compliance, and alignment with Y values.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned by leadership.
