Senior Director of Aquatics & Safety

Oversees aquatics programs, safety, staff, and pool ops to ensure quality, innovation, and a great experience for all participants.
Job Description

The Senior Director of Aquatics & Safety supervises a mission-critical set of services to engage all aquatics participants and members in healthy lifestyles with utmost concern for their safety. The Sr. Director is responsible for the organization, delivery, supervision, safety and quality of YMCA aquatics programs and classes, pool equipment and staffing for the benefit of members, participants and the community. The Sr. Director will know and follow aquatics best practices, innovate and implement programs and necessary safety and security procedures. The Sr. Director will lead day to to day operations and pool maintenance; hire, supervise and train staff; develop and monitor program budgets to meet fiscal objectives; and oversee & manages the Custodial Manager. The Senior Director supports Missoula YMCA Swim Team (MYST) and head coach. The Senior Director will maintain and support a quality member and program participant experience. 

The Senior Director must be able to thrive in an environment with the unique challenges of a non-profit, community service organization and have the flexibility to work in a constantly changing environment. Works with limited supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

AQUATICS:

  • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local, YMCA health and safety regulations
  • Offers quality member service and enhances member program experience.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive aquatics program plan of open swim time, classes and swim team practices, member times and meets with special consideration to best practices for diversity, inclusion, equity and accessibility.
  • Promotes and incorporates the Y’s core values and character development model into all program activities
  • Supervises staff responsible for lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR training
  • Conducts and ensures proper maintenance and cleanliness of pool, aquatics facilities and equipment, secures and schedules pool facilities, maintains records of pool chemical levels & maintenance
  • Maintains building cleanliness, conducts regular building inspections and walk throughs.
  • Participates in the strategic planning for the department, develops, reviews and monitors annual department budget to meet fiscal objectives, makes adjustments and updates as needed and creates draft budgets
  • Recruits, trains, develops and supervises all program staff, including the MYST Head
  • Coach, Aquatics Coordinator, lifeguards and swim instructors
  • Supports the MYST program and head coach
  • Schedules, monitors, supports, maintains regular communication with, and verifies and submits payroll for aquatic staff.
  • Hires and trains staff and conducts annual employee reviews
  • Maintains records of staff certifications
  • Works to achieve program enrollment goals and other departmental goals and objectives, compiles program statistics and reports, and assists in the marketing and distribution of program information
  • Works with other departments to innovate and expand pool and aquatics offerings
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with other community organizations
  • Provides exemplary customer service to program participants’ families (registration help, billing help, schedule changes, questions, etc.)
  • Responsible for safety of the individuals using the facilities and in programs and for the oversight and completion of required incident documentation
  • Learns and uses participant names to build relationships and small communities and kindred groups

MEMBER SERVICES: 

  • ·In coordination with the COO, develops, oversees and manages annual program budgets ,i.e. Aquatics & Custodian, to meet fiscal objectives, makes adjustments as needed and creates draft budgets to determine new program feasibility;
  • Works with the director in implementing industry best practices, documenting internal processes and training and provides tools and resources to strengthening community awareness, member engagement and program promotion.
  • Increases knowledge and familiarity with Daxko operations, Paylocity and other programs as they apply to the department and facility.

GENERALLY:

  • Assists in fundraising activities and YMCA special events, as well as the larger organization, including the Annual Support Campaign and the YMCA Riverbank Run. 
  • Completes required child sexual abuse prevention training and complies with legal and ethical obligations as a mandatory reporter of suspected child abuse and cooperates fully with any investigation of such abuse
  • Creates or oversees the creation of an SOP binder for backup/delegate use
  • Performs other duties as assigned 
  • Provide positive customer service experience to program families (registration and billing assistance as needed, schedule changes, questions, etc.), responds to inquiries and complaints in a timely manner
Qualifications

Education/Certification

Required -  Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; or one or two years of related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required – Certified lifeguard, or willing to get certified pool Operator License.

Preferred- Customer Service Experience, management, supervisior or experience.

Required Certifications

Required – Certified lifeguard, or willing to get certified pool Operator License.
