Swim Safety Tips for Adults and Seniors

Intro

Water safety doesn’t retire with age. Swimming is not only a refreshing way to stay active—it’s also a low-impact exercise that supports heart health, joint mobility, and mental well-being. But for adults and seniors, especially those with health considerations or limited mobility, safety should always be top of mind. Whether you’re lounging at the lake, doing laps at your local YMCA, or taking a dip on vacation, these mindful steps can help adults and seniors stay safe, confident and soak up all the benefits of swimming this summer.

1. Gear up! All children and adults should wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets when on boats or near open water. Hats, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing and sunscreen with a high SPF will help protect against sunburn. Water shoes can also help prevent slips around wet surfaces. Don’t forget the first aid kit!

2. Stay hydrated and keep energy levels up: Pack balanced snacks, meals and plenty of water. Listen to your body and rest when you feel tired or muscles cramping.

3. Consider a swim refresher: Haven’t taken a dip in a while? The Y offers water programs for all ages and fitness levels. It’s a great way to build water safety skills, confidence and community!

4. Swim with a buddy: Always swim with a friend or family member, even if there will be a lifeguard present. Even the strongest, most experienced swimmers can become fatigued or distressed while out in the water and the buddy system means someone is there who can help in the event of an emergency—plus, swimming together is fun!

5. Stay present—avoid distractions like phones: It might be tempting to check your phone or take a quick photo, but distractions can be dangerous around water. Whether you're in or near the pool, spa, or wellness center, it's important to stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Slippery surfaces, unexpected movements, or changes in water depth can pose risks—especially if your attention is elsewhere. Keep your phone tucked away and focus on enjoying the moment safely.

At the Y, we are committed to building confidence in and around water, both through our Safety Around Water program and swimming lessons for all ages, offered at locations across the country.
