Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Early Learning Center Director and teachers, this position is responsible for supervision and care of children in the early learning program and aiding the team of teachers in general supervision and management of a class of children. The Early Learning Center Assistant Teacher provides direction for the program and classroom, assists in planning and implements age-appropriate program curriculum. This position is also responsible for record-keeping, safety, and helping with inventory of supplies in the classroom. The Assistant teacher provides a quality experience to children and parents that is in accordance with the association’s policies and procedures that focus on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of 6 ECE units from an accredited college and a commitment to continue education to obtain a BA in ECE or a related field (AA minimum for associate teachers).
  • A minimum of 6 months experience in this field or a related field.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Up-to-date TB test every 2 years. If you have a chest x-ray on file a TB test is no longer required.
  • Must have a current Live scan active on file.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate
    program activities.
  • Infant and toddler teachers are required to have completed an infant and toddler class from an accredited college with a “C” grade or better.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • In-house Sexual Harassment, Child Abuse and Safety Trainings must be completed within the first 10 days of employment.
  • CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained within 30 days of hire and must be from one of the following certifying organizations:
    • American Red Cross
    • American Heart Association
    • American Safety & Health Institute
Essential Functions
  • Assist in the implementation of curriculum and activities within the established guidelines.
  • Implement daily lesson and activity plans for the classroom.
  • Supervise children and volunteers, classroom, and all activities.
  • Make ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  • Maintain positive relationships and effective communication with parents.
  • Maintain program site and equipment.
  • Maintaining required program records.
  • Depending on the age of the child, diapering, potty training, and bathroom supervision.
  • Attend and participate in fundraising, family nights, program activities, material explorations, parent work days, parent conferences, staff meetings, and staff training.
  • Promote, establish and maintain a positive YMCA image at all times.
  • Follow YMCA and licensing policies and procedures to complete all assigned tasks and duties in an efficient, timely and positive manner at all times.
  • Model anti-biased behavior towards children, parents or staff.
  • Maintain State Licensing and staff/child ratios requirements at all times.
  • Employees must be flexible with their room assignments, willing to assist in the classrooms that need their help with a positive attitude.
  • Address parent concerns and comments in a timely and professional manner; keep the Classroom Teacher and the Early Learning Center Director informed of all parent concerns and issues.
  • Properly document and report any behavior concerns/incidents with parent and/or ELC Director as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
