Job Description

The Executive Director of Camping (ED) reports directly to the Chief Operting Officer (COO) and is responsible for administering the camp operations of South Mountain YMCA (The Y). The ED is responsible for the successful operation of the following departments of the Y: Outdoor Center, Overnight Camp, Day Camp, Food Service, and any other customer-facing operations. The ED supervises the Directors of these departments, including responsibility for budgeting and financial results. The incumbent is also responsible for staff performance evaluations, staff recruitment, and staff development. The ED, in coordination with the COO, provides leadership and direction to the departments by coaching department managers and by providing direction to the appropriate committees and volunteers. A major function is to assure attainment of enrollment and retention goals. Expense control and effective resource management is imperative. The ED provides significant support for Human Resources, Finance, Buildings and Grounds, and Financial Development for the camping departments.

This position works remotely from the Chief Operating Officer and YMCA of the Pines’ corporate office and is based out of South Mountain YMCA Camps in Reinholds, PA.

Qualifications

This position requires a minimum of a college degree, the YMCA Multi-Team or Branch leadership certification (or obtain within 24 months), significant experience in all aspects of day-to-day operations of camping and conference programing, including administration, supervision, and program development is required. Crucial is the deep understanding of the philosophy of camp and conferences as it relates to the physical, emotional, spiritual and environmental safety and learning of the campers and staff. This position also requires program evaluation, statistical analysis, organization, and planning skills as well as relational skills, integrity, flexibility and the ability to focus in the midst of commotion. Communication with disparate audiences, especially parents, is essential. The ideal candidate will have significant professional experience. Finally, the position requires someone who can: step bravely, value others, seize joy, explore more, be resilient, and aim to understand.

Essential Functions

The ED must understand the nature and purpose of the Y and understand the proper role of volunteers and staff. A knowledge of quality program development and implementation, innovation, continuous improvement, and sound financial practices is a must. The incumbent must possess outstanding communication and organizational skills in order to relate to volunteers and staff, and to achieve results on many diverse projects. Superior interpersonal relationship skills, writing and verbal skills are essential. The ED must be able to deliver quality member and program services.

In coordination with the COO, lead organizational level change;
•Maintain a culture of best-in-class customer service;
•Coordinate the implementation of a unified character-development program throughout supervised departments;
•Supervise department directors to ensure that sound operation principles are in practice. Accountable for the financial performance of these units;
•Provide leadership for program development and coordination of departments; providing outreach programs to meet the needs of special and non-traditional segments of the community;
•Identify potential areas for department coperative programming to accomplish organizational goals;

•Assist department staff in the planning, development, training and implementation of new program focuses and activities;
•Keep records (pertaining to program and membership) essential for control, evaluation and reporting to committees, the Board of Directors and the CEO;
•Cordinate, monitor, and update Y program policies and guidelines;
•Cordinate the training of the Y staff at all levels - including a new staff orientation program focusing on mission, expectations and customer service;
•Responsible for the implementation of a program evaluation system throughout the Y to guarantee faithfulness to YMCA purpose, high quality and maintenance of Y standards;
•Responsible for enrollment and statistical reports;
•Monitor monthly financial reports to assure that revenue targets are met and expenses are controlled;
•Responsible for customer relations, including complaint resolution;
•Responsible for coordinating the marketing for all camping programs; and
•Responsible for the operational growth of the Y through program expansion, customer recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, new site development, collaborations, mergers and acquisitions.

Required Certifications

Must have or obtain Red Cross CPR/First-Aid certification within 180 days of hire.
