Wellness & Aquatics Coordinator

Seeking our next Coordinator to oversee all Wellness & Aquatics programming.
Job Description

Under the direction of the CEO, this position will be key in guiding resource development and implementation of high quality YMCA Aquatic & Wellness programs to enhance the member and program participant experience and promote long-term involvement through a variety of exceptional programs and services that results in nurturing the potential in children (youth development), supporting members in their wellness journey (healthy living), and driving advocacy and community awareness (social responsibility).  The position will be responsible for: safety; policy compliance; leadership of aquatic & wellness initiatives including swim lessons, swim instructor development, lifeguard training, personal training, group exercise, in-service training; assist with developing and maintaining relationships; supervision of Aquatics & Wellness staff.

Qualifications
  1. Previous experience working in the health & wellness and/or aquatics preferred (not required).
  2. Certification in area of expertise (if no degree). (Group Exercise, Personal Trainer, etc. Can complete upon hiring)
  3. Must complete the following trainings withing 30-120 days:
    1. CPR/AED & First Aid certificationsEmergency procedure training
    2. Approved Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter
    3. Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor
  4. Ability to plan, organize and implement age and skill-appropriate activities.
  5. Must have strong communication and organizational skills and an ability to work with minimal supervision.
  6. At least 20 years of age.

  • Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor aquatics environment.  Outdoor exposure to wind, sun, summer, and winter temperature.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch. 
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
  • Work in a team environment and encourage open communication regarding concerns/issues with members, participants, children, parents or co-workers.
  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities.

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION: The Le Mars Y is committed to the safety of all our members, program participants, guests, and staff.  This commitment to safety includes child abuse prevention.  All staff, upon hire, are REQUIRED to complete assigned child abuse prevention training within the first 30 days of hire.  In addition, staff will be required to complete annual refresher training assigned by the Praesidium Guardian.  All staff are required to read and sign our mandatory reporter policy.

Essential Functions
  1. Create a welcoming, hopeful, determined, genuine and nurturing atmosphere that fosters a sense of belonging for all those we serve.
  2. Maintain Lifeguard certification within 6 months to help cover shifts when needed.
  3. Responsible for the development, operation, communication and growth of wellness programming: including health and wellness for all ages, personal training, and group exercise. 
  4. Responsible for the development, operation, and growth of aquatic programming: swim lessons, pool parties, special events, etc. 
  5. Support the hiring, training, scheduling, supervising and evaluation process for group fitness instructors, personal trainers, lifeguards and swim instructors.
  6. Assist CEO, Senior Program Director and other Aquatics Staff in overseeing operations at both the INDOOR and OUTDOOR pools.
  7. Demonstrate a positive and caring attitude with members, guests, staff, and community.
  8. Attend and assist in planning and leading staff meetings, training sessions, other required meetings, and evaluation of staff members.
  9. Teach/Coach/Lead health and wellness programs and fitness classes as needed or directed.
  10. Provides for upkeep of program facilities and equipment; ensures the physical environment is safe and thriving, including ADA accommodations where appropriate.
  11. Maintains program site, equipment and required program/class records.  Keeps record of aquatics staff certifications and ensure all staff maintain current certifications. 
  12. Demonstrates and supports the objectives of the Y’s mission statement and values by maintaining the Y-Voice in all that you say and do ~ welcoming, hopeful, determined, genuine, and nurturing.
  13. Must conduct themselves in a professional manor at all times in and out of our program site.
  14. Perform additional duties as assigned in the Aquatics and Wellness Departments
