Job Description

Develops, organizes and implements high-quality, member-focused YMCA aquatic programs.

Qualifications

1. High School Diploma or equivalent.

2. One to two years related experience preferred; for example, as a head lifeguard, etc.

3. Requirements prior to start: Child Abuse Prevention, Lifeguard Certification, CPR Certification, First Aid Certification.

4. Requirements within 60 days of hire include completion of: New Staff Orientation, Bloodborne Pathogens, Sexual Harassment Prevention, and Hazardous Communication trainings.

5. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities.

Essential Functions

1. In conjunction with Aquatics Director or designee, provides administration and supervision of the aquatics staff, swimming pool and related areas per YMCA requirements.

2. Provides emergency services when necessary.

3. Coordinates scheduling for private, semi-private and adapted swim lessons, as well as scouting events.

4. Assists with managing daily shift coverage. Coordinates or provides emergency coverage as needed, assuring pools have a certified lifeguard on deck during all operating hours and after-hours rentals.

5. Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with department operational plans.

6. Assists with recruiting, hiring, training, developing, scheduling and directing personnel and volunteers as needed. Assists with the review and evaluation of staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.

7. Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.

8. Conducts and ensures proper maintenance of pools. Secures and schedules pool facilities. Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.

9. Conducts lifeguarding and swim instruction in-services. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.

10. Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in program.

11. Must be willing to become a Lifeguard Instructor within 6 months of being hired.

12. Teach Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid classes to YMCA staff and the community.

13. Performs all other duties as assigned.
