Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Lifeguard at Ridgewood YMCA creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Ridgewood Lifeguard (All Year Around) Darlington Waterfront Lifeguard (Seasonal)

Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 15
    • Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, and first aid.
    • Current American Red Cross Certification
    • Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date
    • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
    • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
    • Prior experience working with children or in a related field.
    • Work well with children of various ages and abilities.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required.
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks and willingness to maintain a flexible schedule.
    • Child abuse prevention training must be completed on an annual basis.
    • Lifeguard must be always friendly and professional.
  • Other Duties as Assigned 
Essential Functions
  1. Maintains active surveillance of the water area.
  2. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures; completes related reports as required.
  3. Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
  4. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  5. Lifeguards are expected to maintain vigilance to prevent facility emergencies and ensure guests always remain safe. Lifeguards may also be asked to assist with greeting patrons and guests, monitoring water chemistry and maintaining cleanliness of the facility.
  6. Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
  7. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
  8. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  9. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  10. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
  11. Carry out other duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director
