The Director of Youth Sports and Wellness is responsible for the successful operation of the Youth Sports department, which includes program administration and development, fiscal management, staff administration and development, quality control, and volunteer recruitment.
Key responsibilities include strategic planning, relationship building, fundraising, and the growth of new programs. The Director will oversee the hiring and supervision of employees, train staff and volunteers, evaluate program effectiveness, manage budgets, and resolve issues that arise, all while adhering to YMCA core values. Collaboration with other departments is essential to achieve the Association’s goals. This position focuses strongly on youth sports for ages pre-K through 8th grade.
Bachelor’s Degree in physical education, sport management, human services, social services, recreation, business, or equivalent preferred.
3+ years of related experience in managing multiple program activities, program development and marketing, and fiscal management.
2+ years of experience in programming sports leagues, ideally basketball.
Strong experience in community basketball programming preferred.
Ability to assist in the direction of multi-site programs through supervision of staff, public relations, program development, and fundraising.
Excellent financial skills, including budget preparation and project management.
Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal.
Strong time management and organizational skills.
Knowledge of quality program development and coordination of activities.
Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
Completion of YMCA Team Leader certification within 3 years.
Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
The employee needs sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions and safely supervise program activities in various indoor and outdoor locations.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer for extended periods and communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.
The employee frequently needs to sit and reach and must be able to move around the work environment.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Manages the youth sports program, including developing and monitoring the program budget to meet fiscal objectives; compiling program statistics to evaluate effectiveness and participation; securing, scheduling, and maintaining fields and facilities; creating and scheduling activities or events; maintaining, updating, and transporting program equipment for games and practices.
Ability to manage basketball leagues and programming over two gymnasiums.
Ensures programs and services meet community needs by supervising existing activities, establishing new ones, and expanding the program as needed. Assists in marketing and distributing program information.
Introduces Adult Sports and Recreation programs to engage with the communities we serve.
Implements and oversees all aspects of Sports Galore Summer Camp.
Assures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including ADA accommodations; ensures YMCA program standards are met and safety procedures followed.
Recruits and hires diverse staff and volunteers, onboard and develops them for success, maintains staff schedules, and evaluates performance.
Creates teams; develops and distributes practice and game schedules; trains and schedules sports officials and coaches; develops and distributes rules, guidelines, and handbooks; purchases and distributes uniforms and awards; coordinates team photographs; organizes season parties and events; conducts sports clinics.
Models relationship-building skills; develops and maintains collaborative relationships with staff, parents, caregivers, and community organizations to maximize program impact and outcomes; maintains clear and concise communication.
Organizes or participates in YMCA activities, such as committees, special events, and fundraising.
Responsible for operating summer youth camps.
Performs other duties as assigned.
