Accounting Manager

The Midland YMCA seeks an energized and experienced professional to fill the role of Accounting Manager.
Job Description

The position of Accounting Manager requires exceptional accounting leadership and strategic planning skills; a deep understanding of accounting management in the nonprofit sector; and the ability to align financial strategies with the mission and goals of the YMCA of Midland.  The Accounting Manager must also posess effective communication skills to convey financial information to diverse stakeholders, utilizing both traditional and modern communication channels to promote financial transparency and ensure the fiscal health of the organization.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or finance. CPA certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 3–5 year of accounting experience (nonprofit experience preferred).
  • Knowledge and understanding of general business matters and accounting processes required including accrual and /or fund accounting, budget development, financial reporting, cash management, payroll, banking, investments, and debt financing instruments. Application of GAAP is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, & Outlook), ability to develop and use spreadsheets and standard business software systems.
Essential Functions
  • Oversees the operations of the accounting/finance information systems to accomplish the proper and consistent recording and reporting of all operations, transactions, assets, and liabilities of the YMCA for all funds and other assigned departments.
  • Works directly with the accounting staff and performs various accounting activities. Preparation and recording journal entries, income statement and balance sheet account review; ensuring proper allocation of revenues and expenses to departments, programs, and grants; managing deferred revenues, restricted revenues; account payable/receivable monitoring; overseeing month and year-end closing; grant compliance monitoring, applications, and reporting; bank account and credit card reconciliations, prepare and book daily and/or monthly journal entries.
  • Reviews, updates, and/or develops internal control systems with guidance from CPA for the YMCA and monitors compliance.
  • Oversees and provides requested documentation and support for monthly closings and annual independent audit and tax return preparations. Ensures that current accounting standards and legal requirements are met with our contracted CPA.
  • Maintains records, and with assistance of contracted CPA, prepare various internal and external reports to YMCA of the USA and governmental and other outside agencies.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality and dependability to include attendance at work. Must keep sensitive information relative to the organization, employees, and/or the people we serve confidential.
  • Oversees the development of the annual and monthly operating budget and forecasts, including all department budgets. Works closely with operations staff to ensure that department budgets are well-planned, realistic, and prepared in a timely manner. Review monthly variances with department directors.
  • Maintains good working relationships with contracted CPA, auditors, bankers, investment counselors, attorneys, and other professional advisors.
  • Communicates with and provides support to the Executive Director and Department Managers, serving as a resource person to management and program personnel in all matters relating to accounting, budgeting & forecasting and financial reporting.
  • Serves as resource person to management and program personnel in all matters relating to budget, accounting, collections, and accounts payable.  
  • Participates and provides annual campaign and fundraiser support.
  • Ensures incidents/accidents are documented and reported.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
