COVID-19 Emergency Services: Food Distribution

The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic are unprecedented and Ys have responded in a variety of ways to meet community needs. Amid school closures and economic uncertainty, a rapidly increasing number of people faced food insecurity. In response, hundreds of Ys nationwide have provided free grab-and-go meals to help address this serious issue.

Food Distribution In Action

More than 800 Ys and 1,000 Y-affiliated food distribution sites are providing meals to those most at risk of going hungry. Below are a few examples of how Ys are making a difference nationwide.

• YMCA of Centre County convenes community partners to feed kids across 7 school districts  
• YMCA of Greater Boston has served 85,000 meals in the first 10 days of offering food assistance  
• YMCA of Greater Chattanooga partnered to feed kids at 70 sites in Tennessee  
• YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo partnered with the Sherman Lake YMCA camp to serve more than 1,000 meals a day  
• YMCA of Greater Montgomery feeds 1,000 kids a day through its Brown Bag Bus program
