Job Description

The YMCA of Greater Long Beach is a $43M organization with 900 employees including 340 benefits eligible.  The Los Altos Family YMCA serves Long Beach, Seal Beach, and Los Alamitos.  The branch is going through a capital campaign to expand and renovate the current facility. The project is expected to break ground in early 2027. Current facility includes a pool, strength training center, outdoor strength patio, fitness studios, airnasium, and child-watch area—supporting inclusive, full-spectrum programming for all ages. It operates aquatics, childcare, enrichment programs for schools, day camp, sports and healthy living programs. The current annual operating budget is $4.2M with an annual campaign of $320,000.  The Los Altos Family YMCA has on average 110 staff and up to 160 for the summer, with 5 full-time exempt staff.  The branch operates 6 after-school and day camp sites, aquatic programs, youth sports, a very active senior membership, and 2,000 members predominately family based. Includes a strong 34-person Board of Managers supporting 6 committees.

Responsible for the overall leadership and operation of the Los Altos Branch, including board development, membership growth and retention, marketing, programs, staff development, financial management, community relations, and strategic partnerships. Must inspire and engage staff, volunteers, and members in support of the Y’s mission. Demonstrated success in financial management, sustaining the nonprofit model while driving growth. Provide dynamic, goal-driven leadership that ensures high-quality, consistent member experience. Requires strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and the ability to lead through change. Must exemplify the Y’s core values—caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility—in all actions and decisions.

Qualifications

Education & Certifications:  Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Arts degree required; master’s degree preferred.  YMCA Branch Leader certificate required within three years from date of hire.

Experience & Background: 8 or more years of progressive management experience, preferably in a YMCA or nonprofit setting with budgets of $4M+. Strong ability to lead operations independently with a proven track record in membership and program growth and capital campaign experience. Skilled in building community partnerships; experience with capital projects and facility development preferred. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations and thrive in a high-demand, high-reward environment. Confident and decisive leadership is essential.

Essential Functions
  • Capital Campaign and Construction
  • Coordinates the development of the Branch Board and committees. Directs the volunteer activities (policy and program) of the branch. 
  • Directs strategic planning efforts and develops the annual operating plan of the branch. 
  • Directs the financial development activities of the branch. 
  • Develops, manages, and monitors the branch operating budget, meets or exceeds budget targets. 
  • Represents and promotes the YMCA in the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community agencies in service delivery area. 
  • Oversee the hiring, training, and supervision of staff. 
  • Develops and directs high-quality member engagement strategies and programs that support branch and association's mission, goals, and strategies. 
  • Ensures the safety and maintenance of high-quality facilities, grounds, and equipment. 
  • Directs branch marketing and communication efforts. 
  • Directs programs and initiatives Association as wide as needed. 
  • Serves as a member of the association’s executive council and supports the overall objectives of the YMCA. 
  • Provides strategic leadership and oversight for programs and initiatives across the entire association.
