The Senior Accountant is a hands-on, mission-minded professional who brings both technical skill and intellectual curiosity to the work. You will own key accounting functions, contribute to the month-end close process, support the annual audit, and partner with operational leaders across the association to strengthen financial literacy and accountability. Qualifications

Education & Experience 

Required

·        Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

·        Minimum of four to six (4-6) years of progressive accounting experience, with at least one year in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.

·        Working knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, including fund accounting, restricted and unrestricted net assets, and grant accounting.

·        Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, complex formulas, and data analysis tools.

·        Strong attention to detail, analytical mindset, and commitment to accuracy.

·        A collaborative spirit and the ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial staff.

·        Openness to learning new systems and approaches, and genuine enthusiasm for building and improving processes.

·        Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.

Preferred

·        Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, or active progress toward licensure.

·        Experience in public accounting, which has provided exposure to audits, financial reporting, and multi-entity environments.

·        Familiarity with accounting software used in the nonprofit sector (experience with Blackbaud, MIP, or similar platforms is a plus).

·        YMCA or social services industry experience.

Work Environment & Impact

This position is primarily based at the YMCA of Greater Charlotte’s Association Support Center in Charlotte, NC. Standard office environment with prolonged periods of computer use. Some flexibility in scheduling may be available consistent with association policy. This role operates in a dynamic, mission-driven environment with multiple revenue streams, including membership, programs, camps, and philanthropy. 

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post journal entries, maintain the general ledger, and support timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Perform balance sheet account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Support the annual audit by preparing schedules, documentation, and responses for external auditors.
  • Perform accounting in compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (ASC 958), grant restrictions, and fund accounting requirements.
  • Maintain and improve documentation of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Leverage advanced Excel skills to build and maintain financial models, reconciliation templates, and reporting tools that increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with program and branch staff to provide financial guidance, answer accounting questions, and support budget management.
  • Perform other duties and analysis as assigned by the VP of Finance and Accounting.
