Trips and Leadership Director

The YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee is currenlty seeking a Trips and Leadership Director for its Camp Minikani location in Hubertus, WI.
Job Description

Under the direction of the Summer Camp Director, Camp Minikani, the Trips and Leadership Director is responsible for providing hands-on leadership to trip program and outpost at Camp Minikani. The Trips and Leadership Director will plan, implement, and grow high-quality trip programing for Explorer, Master Explorer, Expedition, and Leadership Training (LT) programs.  The Trips and Leadership Director will expand the trip program at Camp Minikani and year-round opportunities for Leadership Trainees.  The Trips and Leadership Training Director will be responsible for archiving and building deeper connections with alumni, former staff and leadership trainees.  This position will also assist in the recruitment of kids who attend camp on scholarship.   

The Trips and Leadership Director will create a summer and year-round trip program that meets the developmental needs and fosters the development of all Minikani campers. The Trips and Leadership Director will prioritize building relationships with all individuals involved in camp, including campers, staff members, parents, alumni, and community members. The Trips and Leadership Training Director will provide direct leadership, guidance, and support for directors of trip-based programs and their campers.

This position will also be responsible for collecting, building and implementing an archival system for all camp historical records; including but not limited to those of former staff, campers, advisory board, LT’s, parents, and program participants.

Qualifications

1.    Must be at least 21 years of age.

2.    Undergraduate four-year degree preferred.

3.    A minimum of 3 seasons of resident camp experience is required.

4.    Must live on site from June 1-Aug 30 each summer. 

5.    Current certification in Wilderness First Aid (Wilderness First Responder preferred) CPR Pro and First Aid is required.

6.    Current certification in Lifeguarding is preferred, but not required.

7.    Lifeguard, CPR pro and first aid trainer certification preferred but not required.

8.    Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License is required.

3.    Demonstrated leadership experience in managing a variety of programs, motivational skills.

4.    Able to exhibit a sincere interest in children and comprehend their needs.

5.    Ability to travel, hike, camp and oversee an outdoor program.  

6.    Proven ability in displaying initiative, good judgment and an ability to make decisions independently. 

7.    Ability to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds.

8.    Must be able to recognize and respond appropriately to unsafe situations. 

9.    Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills; public speaking, capacity to prepare reports and conduct training programs.

10.  Competent computer skills; Windows environment

SUPERVIOSRY RESPONSIBILITIES 

 Supervises summer trip administration staff (LTDs, EUDs) and trip camp counselors (Explorer counselors).

Essential Functions

1.    Understand and implement the Vision and Values of Camp Minikani and the YMCA. 

2.    Supervise camp trip unit directors, counseling staff, summer administration staff and LT directors giving them direction, resources and leadership.

3.    Build relationships with campers, staff, Summer Administrative Staff, Camping Services team, parents, and alumni.  

4.    Oversee all trip-based programs ensuring they have adequate and appropriate itineraries and maps. 

5.    Control expenses in keeping within budgeted amounts.

1.    Ensure all programs follow established guidelines, including federal, state and local regulations as well as American Camp Association (ACA) standards.

2.    Maintain program equipment inventories and highlight equipment needs that can be purchased during the non-summer season.  

3.    In conjunction with the Summer Camp Director, plan and implement the summer staff training and weekly staff meetings.

4.    Plan and implement year-round LT experiences.

5.    Coordinate pre-trip meetings for all Minikani trips.  

6.    Coordinate pre-summer and continual trip visits to evaluate the safety and quality of all trip programs. Document feedback and report back to Summer Camp Director and Executive Director 

7.    Provide frequent feedback for trip-based directors to assist them in continuous development. Feedback should not wait until formal evaluations. 

8.    Be present and oversee all food pack-outs for trips both on and off camp. Including: camp outs, Explorers, Expedition, Leadership Trainees, Master Explorers.  Communicate with kitchen when more inventory is required.  

9.    Coordinate, write and deliver thorough evaluations of trip-based directors twice per summer.

10. Work with Executive Director to create system for archiving staff, camper, LT, and parent information.

11. Coordinate with the Rags Programs.

12. Build archive of former staff and campers (work through historical documents).

13. Ensure that all trip programs receive the resources they need to adequately serve the campers in their area.  

14. Create and implement a check-in and check-out system for any program that utilizes the outpost including campouts for on-site cabins.  

15. Create and implement a check-in and check-out system for all camp vehicles that leave camp. 

16. Collect and compile all trip receipts upon check-in. Ensure petty cash is returned.  

17. Track trip program enrollment throughout the summer.  

18. Ensure that trips are represented in Camp’s social media outlets. 

19. Document and save all staffing and programming information.

20. Be committed to the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee’s child abuse/neglect prevention efforts as a mandatory reporter.

21. Enforce staff expectations in an appropriate manner.  

22. Other duties as assigned.
