YMCA Camp Pendalouan on the shores of Big Blue Lake offers a quiet, rustic setting for campers and groups throughout Michigan. Pendalouan is located near Muskegon, Michigan, on over 105 acres of mature oak-pine forest, adjacent to the Manistee National Forest and the White River.

With 100 years of camping experience, Pendalouan provides quality programming dedicated to safety, fun, healthy living, and character development. Our programming focuses on instilling our values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility that help provide benefits of community and belonging for all. The Pendalouan community has a wide range of campers from all over West Michigan, the Chicago area, and from across the country. Camping at Pendalouan has been impacted by thousands of volunteers, staff, alumni, campers, families, and friends in the past century. Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  The Program Director oversees and directs the operations of their assigned program(s) including program development, sustainability, staff development, volunteer and community relationships, and promotion.

Program Management: Oversee planning, implementation & evaluation of assigned YMCA programs to meet community needs and align with organizational goals.

Staff Supervision: Recruit, train, and manage program staff while fostering a collaborative and mission-driven team environment.

Community Engagement: Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations and leaders to expand and enhance program offerings.

Operations & Logistics: Coordinate schedules, facilities, and logistics to ensure smooth and safe program operations across all sites.

Fundraising & Grant Management: Secure funding through grants and sponsorships, ensuring compliance and sustainability for key programs.

Advocacy & Leadership: Represent the YMCA in advocacy efforts and serve as a visible leader within the organization and community.

Evaluation & Impact Reporting: Monitor and report program outcomes to ensure continuous improvement and alignment with community needs.

 

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation, education or a closely related field; 3-5 years experience preferred
  • Strong problem solving skills, ability to meet deadlines and achieve quality results; Strong supervisory skills and team development.
  • Ability to communicate with non-technical leaders and administrators providing a clear understanding of appropriate technology solutions to support and enhance business needs.  
  • Knowledge of and experience in managing project and grant budgets.
  •  High proficiency in youth  development and working with youth.
  • YMCA Team Leader Certification preferred, or completed within 1 year of start date
Essential Functions
  • Oversee operations for all Summer Camp programs at the Muskegon YMCA including Resident Overnight Camp, Pendalouan Day Camp and Muskegon YMCA Day Camp
  • Expand Pendalouan’s camper numbers from a well established strong foundation.  
  • Identify and work with community partners to expand knowledge of and referrals into programs.
  • Plan and execute innovative programs that adhere to grant opportunities while maintaining the spirit and tradition of Pendalouan.
  • Supervise seasonal leadership on camper safety, behavior management and enjoyment of program activities.
  • Maintain and monitor YMCA Camp Pendalouan property and facilities.
  • Manage the program budget, ensuring activities stay within financial limits and meet any specific grant requirements. Adjust programming as needed to stay on budget.
  • Assist in seeking, writing, applying & managing Summer Camp program grants.

  • Identify and assist in marketing opportunities, social media and recruitment events.

  • Manage food service and kitchen personnel and budget.

  • Hire, Train and Manage a seasonal staff, including international opportunities, leadership development and mentorship.

  • Work closely with other program directors to align goals and opportunities at the Muskegon YMCA and YMCA Camp Pendalouan.
