Camp Description

For more than 100 years, children and families throughout Iowa and the Midwest have flocked to a scenic 400-acre site along the banks of the Des Moines River to take part in the life-changing experience known as Y Camp.

Des Moines Y Camp offers traditional overnight camp programs, summer day camp, family camps, outdoor education programs, leadership and team-building programs and retreats for a variety of groups.

Job Description

Oversees Summer and Family Camps at the Des Moines YMCA Camp, which includes staff supervision, program development, marketing, community relations, financial development, maintenance of programs, hiring, training and supervision of staff for Overnight, Family and Day Camp. Participates in volunteer and staff development, collaborations with community agencies and facility management.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience.
  • One to two years of experience in related program development and program management.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a leadership role. 
  • Demonstrated computer skills in a Google Workspace or Microsoft Office environment.
  • American Red Cross CPR-PR/AED/First Aid Certifications or equivalent certifications approved by the YMCA – prior to first day and maintained afterwards.
  • Current CDL License & passenger endorsement for assigned vehicle - within the first 12 months of hire
Essential Functions
  1. Develop and direct high quality camper and family engagement programs and strategies that support camp and Association goals and strategies. Direct summer & family camp marketing and communication efforts.
  2. Recruit, hire, train, develop and direct seasonal employees and volunteers for Overnight Camp, Day Camp and Family Camp. Reviews and evaluates staff performance while developing strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  3. Develop, manage and monitor assigned operating budgets to meet and exceed targets. Is responsible for meeting financial goals for corresponding departments.
  4. Establish plans for the expansion of programs and services in harmony with overall YMCA objectives and the full-time staff team at camp.
  5. Lead operations of Summer and Family Camps at the Des Moines Y Camp, which include Overnight Camp, Family Camps, Seasonal Family Programs, Camp Hertko Hollow and Day Camp. Supports Education and Group Camping in non-summer months as needed.
  6. Manage orders and operation of camp store and apparel sales throughout the year.
  7. Represent and promote the YMCA in the local community and develop positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses and government entities. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community agencies in central Iowa.
  8. Ensure that camp programming sustainably embraces the value of diversity, inclusion and globalization.
  9. Provide staff support for assigned committees. Provide staff leadership for annual support campaign. 
  10. Serve as a member of the YMCA management and support the overall objectives of the YMCA.
  11. Manage and maintain program equipment and facilities for corresponding programs to ensure high-quality, well organized supplies.
  12. Provide security and on-site assistance after hours by living in camp provided housing.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
