A YMCA Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program (AFAP) Water Aerobics Instructor leads, plans, and teaches, low-impact, therapeutic water exercise classes designed to improve arthritis symptoms, flexibility, and strength for members. This role focuses on providing a safe, welcoming, and effective workout for participants with varying physical abilities, including those with joint issues or limited mobility.
Certification: Valid Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program (AFAP) certification.
CPR/AED/First Aid: Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED (usually required, often from American Red Cross or AHA).
Experience: Previous experience teaching water fitness or group exercise is preferred.
Physical Demands: Ability to work in and around water, demonstrate exercises on deck or in water, and lift up to 25-55 lbs.
Typical Requirements
Age: Minimum 18 years of age.
Availability: Ability to work early morning, daytime hours or early evening, depending on the YMCA schedule.
Clearances: Ability to pass PA State Police, Child Abuse History, and FBI Fingerprint checks.
Key Responsibilities
Instruct Classes: Lead safe, fun, and effective water exercise classes, adapting exercises to meet the needs of individuals with arthritis.
Develop Routines: Design engaging class plans that focus on range of motion, flexibility, and strength, adhering to the Arthritis Foundation guidelines.
Member Safety: Maintain a safe aquatic environment by following all YMCA policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.
Equipment Maintenance: Set up, clean, and organize pool equipment, ensuring it is stored properly after each class.
Record Keeping: Keep accurate and up-to-date class attendance records.
Member Engagement: Build positive, encouraging relationships with participants, creating an inclusive atmosphere.
Substitute Coverage: Arrange for a substitute if unable to teach a scheduled class.
