Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening
community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Chief Operating Officer at
Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA serves as a key member of the senior leadership team. The Chief Operating
Officer provides strategic and operational leadership for branch operations and program delivery across the
Association, including membership, wellness, youth development, and childcare services. The Chief Operating
Officer is primarily responsible for providing leadership and building systems and processes that improve
program deployment and customer satisfaction association-wide.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree in human services, business, social services or equivalent work experience
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
  • Eight or more years of professional experience in the YMCA or another nonprofit preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in all aspects of operations, including staff supervision and development,
    membership practices, program development and implementation, volunteerism, facility and
    property management and financial practices.
  • Understanding of the nature and purpose of the YMCA and the respective roles of volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of
    the community; track record of building authentic, constructive relationships with others.
Essential Functions

1. Provides direct leadership and oversight to branch executive directors to ensure strong, consistent
operations, addressing root causes of systemic issues rather than symptoms
2. Coaches branch and camp leadership teams while providing guidance to branch boards and volunteers
3. Drives operational growth through program expansion, membership recruitment and retention, pricing
strategies, new site development, partnerships, and mergers and acquisitions; guides decisions on
what to start, stop, and continue
4. Ensures all programs, including childcare, youth development, and other core services, meet YMCA
standards and consistently achieve high levels of quality, safety, and compliance
5. Monitors monthly financial performance to ensure revenue targets are met and expenses are
effectively managed
6. Establishes and drives consistent operational systems, performance metrics, and data-driven decision-
making across all branches
7. Develops and supports organization-wide collaborations and integrated programming to advance YMCA
goals, working with staff teams to implement initiatives
8. Supports planning for maintenance, upgrades, and improvements of existing facilities and equipment,
and assists in planning and development of new facilities
9. Partners with the Board and community stakeholders to ensure the YMCA is effectively identifying and
meeting community needs

10. Works with the CEO to lead long-range strategic planning and monitors progress toward organizational
goals and performance metrics
11. Leads talent development, succession planning, and performance management processes to build a
strong, mission-driven leadership pipeline across the association
12. Ensures organizational compliance with all regulatory requirements and leads risk management
strategies, including safety, legal, and operational risk
13. Represents the CEO in the community as needed
