The Aquatics Director is responsible for the leadership, development, and daily operations of the YMCA aquatics department. This role ensures a safe, engaging, and high-quality aquatic environment for members and program participants. The Aquatics Director oversees lifeguard staff, swim lessons, aquatic fitness, and swim team coordination while promoting water safety and expanding community access to aquatic programming.
This position plays a key role in advancing the YMCA’s mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
· Lifeguard certification (YMCA, Red Cross, or equivalent)
· CPR/AED and First Aid certification
· Experience supervising staff and managing schedules
· Experience with swim lessons, aquatic programming, or lifeguarding operations
· Strong communication, leadership, and customer service skills
· Knowledge of pool operations and water chemistry preferred
· Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
Desired Certifications:
· Lifeguard certified (or willing to obtain) and ready to become a Lifeguard Instructor and Swim Lesson Instructor
Key Responsibilities
Aquatics Safety & Lifeguard Management
· Recruit, hire, train, and supervise all lifeguard staff
· Manage staff schedules and ensure appropriate pool coverage
· Conduct regular in-service trainings and emergency preparedness drills
· Maintain lifeguard equipment, uniforms, and safety supplies
· Ensure compliance with YMCA and local safety standards
Swim Lessons Program
· Recruit, hire, and train swim instructors through the Starfish Aquatics program
· Coordinate instructor schedules and ongoing professional development
· Oversee program registration, billing processes, and participant communication
· Provide excellent customer service for swim lesson families
· Coordinate private swim lessons
· Promote water safety through community outreach and marketing initiatives
· Develop and implement new swim lesson programs and outreach opportunities
Swim Team Coordination
· Maintain clear communication with the Head Coach and Parent Board President in accordance with YMCA leadership structure
· Assist with marketing and public relations for the swim team
· Support coach training and continuing education opportunities
· Foster a strong connection between swim lesson participants and the swim team program
Aquatic Fitness
· Instruct aquatic fitness classes as needed
· Support marketing and program growth for aquatic fitness offerings
· Provide training and continuing education opportunities for aquatic fitness instructors
Pool Operations & Maintenance
· Maintain a working knowledge of pool chemistry and water quality management
· Monitor pool maintenance schedules and operational procedures
· Coordinate communication between aquatics staff and the Maintenance Director
· Oversee pool deck cleanliness and staff cleaning schedules
Desired Certifications:
· Lifeguard certified (or willing to obtain) and ready to become a Lifeguard Instructor and Swim Lesson Instructor
