Job Description

In accordance with Association policies, the Before and After School Care (Y BASE) & Camp Director II is responsible for the direct supervision of the Before and After School Care (Y BASE) & Camp Assistant Director, and additional full-time staff.  

The Before and After School Care & Camp Director II is responsible for multiple high-enrollment school age sites during the school year and multiple summer day camp sites.     

The Before and After School Care & Camp Director II will be responsible for Y BASE and Camp programming including the development, organization, implementation, and facilitation of before and after school enrichment (Y BASE) at multiple offsite locations, summer day camp, and schools out fun day programs. 

The Director will ensure innovative curriculum and activities for youth during the school year (school age) and summer (camp) programming, supervise, develop, coach and train staff to ensure that development occurs in a fun, healthy and safe environment, and ensure program outcomes are consistently achieved. Typical work week may include early morning, late afternoon, weeknights, and occasional weekend events.

Qualifications
  1. Must be at least 21 years of age and have 240 hours of experience in an approved education setting.
  2. Must have completed high school or equivalent.
  3. Minimum of two years of supervisory experience preferred.
  4. Minimum of 240 hours of related experience working with early childhood or school-aged children in an approved setting.
  5. Must meet all Child Care Licensing requirements including one of the following: an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree (related field preferred); or otherwise qualified as a School-Age Director through The Wisconsin Registry.
  6. Must be able to obtain CPR, First Aid, AED, Abusive Head Trauma, Mandated Reporter, Wisconsin Registry certification, and additional non-credit school-age coursework and/or coaching/mentoring (as needed). 
  7. Proven ability to direct offsite and multisite programs through effective and timely communication, supervision of staff, development and monitoring of budgets, and program development. 
  8. Must have a sincere interest and ability to comprehend needs and develop positive outcomes in children from diverse populations. 
  9. Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with others.
  10. Ability to relate effectively with diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  11. Strong written and oral communication skills required.
  12. Exhibit the core values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility in all aspects of their work with the YMCA.
  13. Must have a current driver’s license and be able to travel to multiple work sites during a workday.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs. and work indoors and outdoors; must be able to assume postures in low levels to allow physical and visual contact with children; see and hear well enough to keep children safe; and engage in physical activity with children.    

Essential Functions
  1. Directs, supervises, and facilitates before and after school programming, summer camp, and ancillary programs as assigned by the Operations Director.
  2. Trains, develops, schedules, and directs staff and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance.
  3. Responsible for creation and facilitation of schedules for school age and camp.  Ensures full coverage for licensed programming.
  4. Ensures that program curriculum and activities meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. 
  5. Promptly responds to member and participants needs and manage complaints in a courteous, patient manner. 
  6. Accurately maintain participants' records and other documentation in accordance with department requirements.  Compile program statistics, while monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness and participation in program areas.
  7. Ensure that programs follow safety protocol as established by the YMCA Association and branch guidelines.  Monitor daily operations to adhere to all state, local, and YMCA health and safety regulations. 
  8. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with local elementary schools and community organizations.
  9. Monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  10. Assists in marketing and distribution of program information, manages enrollments and waitlists.
  11. Creates and schedules all camp, Y Base, and schools out fun day sessions, lesson plans and activities.
  12. Secures and monitors transportation for field trips.
  13. Purchases and maintains supplies for all program activities.
  14. Coordinates use of facilities for program activities and events.
  15. Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events including Annual Support Campaign.
  16. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.  Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  17. Participate in branch, Association and program cabinet meetings as assigned.
  18. Responsible for strict adherence to all Association policies and procedures. Conducts annual review of those policies and procedures.
  19. Be a champion for overall branch membership goals, retention, and satisfaction.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly supervises leadership staff in before and after school programming, day camp and other areas as assigned in accordance with the Association policies, mission and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, addressing, and resolving issues.
