Qualifications

Minimum Candidate Criteria
1.    Accredited 4-year college degree preferred with minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable nonprofit organization or business.
2.    Proven successful track record in fiscal management for a complex organization.
3.    Demonstrated ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
4.    Proven ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered and effective in broadening engagement in the community.
5.    Demonstrated excellent leadership and communication skills (written and verbal) as well as personal values aligned with the YMCA mission.
6.    Successful fundraising experience in annual campaigns, capital campaigns and endowment, with documented results.
7.    Direct experience supervising multiple levels of diverse staff. 
8.    Personal values consistent with the YMCA mission of putting Christian principles into practice.

Essential Functions

Position Description and Board Expectations
The Y’s governing board seeks an experienced leader who has the requisite background and skills to achieve excellence in the following areas: 

Refine and Implement the Strategic Plan: Work effectively with volunteers, community leaders, and key staff, to refine the 2025/2026 strategic plan which addresses the needs of the communities served by the Y and includes defined organizational strategies, a clear implementation plan with deliverables, and measurable goals. Key competencies: Change Leadership, Communication & Influence, Critical Thinking & Decision Making, Program/Project Management

Position the Y as a Vital Partner for Community Change: Serve as an ambassador for the YMCA’s mission, purpose, and vision within the community. Possess the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, while always upholding the highest standards and values of the Y. Ensure your Y is seen as a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose, and each other. Key competencies: Communication & Influence, Engaging Community, Collaboration 

Measure, Demonstrate and Communicate the Y’s Impact: Lead board and staff in sharing the Y’s impact through broad-based communication strategies. Report results and be positioned to take leadership in community initiatives. Be a spokesperson for the Y and lift-up the Y’s benefit to the community. Improve Operating Performance: Engage the board and appropriate staff to develop an annual tactical plan for identifying and achieving key goals and objectives towards operating with safe, relevant, and sustainable practices. Diversify revenue by expanding fee-based program offerings. Key competencies: Developing Self & Others, Critical Thinking & Decision Making, Innovation

Steward Fundraising Efforts: Develop and implement an annual fundraising plan that will establish the YMCA as a leading nonprofit organization within the community through the engagement of members, volunteers, staff, and donors. Identify the need for successful capital fundraising, while taking the organization to a new level of effectiveness and impact in annual giving and endowment. Key competencies: Philanthropy, Engaging Community, Communication & Influence

Fiscal Management: Use high-level financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth, and stability, while consistently leading organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Quickly address issues that may arise, forecast future needs, and manage and direct the Y’s operations and activities. Empower and guide staff leaders to lead their departments to successful financial operation. Develop and implement stewardship strategies. Key competencies: Fiscal Management, Critical Thinking & Decision Making, Developing Self & Others, Philanthropy 

Build and Lead Staff: Ensure a talent development system is in place and executed in an affirming, culturally competent and effective manner. Work towards recruiting, retaining, developing, and promoting staff that represent the diversity of the communities you serve. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie, inclusion, and sense of mission and purpose. Create a learning organization to help staff achieve their highest potential. Salary Range
$185,000 - $215,000 annually.

Benefits 

  • Health Plan: Y pays approximately 80% for individuals and 50% for families
  • Y Retirement Fund: 10% plan, with 7% paid by Y and 3% paid by the employee after the employee meets eligibility requirements.
  • Eligible to participate in a 403B savings account through the Y Retirement Fund
  • Life Insurance: $25,000 paid by Y
  • Vacation: Accrues at 2 weeks per year, up to a maximum of 4 weeks per year. Caps at 240 hours.
  • Sick leave: Accrues at 2 weeks per year. Caps at 480 hours.
  • Holidays: 12 paid holidays plus 1 personal day per year

Residency Expectation
It is desired that the CEO live in and or near the service area and becomes actively involved in the community. 

Service Area & Demographics
The Y serves most of the city of Anaheim (zip codes 92801-92805) and the cities of Cypress, Stanton, Buena Park (90620) and La Palma, home to over half a million people.  Median income is approximately  $90,583. Approximately 55% identify as Hispanic/Latino, 23% Caucasian, 15% Asian and 7% other. More than 13% of the population live in poverty.

About the Anaheim Family YMCA
Celebrating its 115th anniversary, the Anaheim Family YMCA was founded in 1911 through a youth-led fundraising effort to bring programs to local children and has evolved into a cornerstone of youth and family development. Over the decades, the Y expanded from early youth leadership programs to health and fitness facilities and later transitioned to a strong community-based model. This shift led to the launch of the award-winning Anaheim Achieves afterschool program in 1999, which now serves more than 7,000 youth daily at 47 schools. In recent years, the Y opened phase one of a new Community Complex in 2021 and played a vital role during COVID-19 through learning support, food distribution, and adaptive programming. Today, the Anaheim Family YMCA proudly stands as one of only two independent YMCAs in Orange County.

Our Desired Impact: Through involvement at the Y, people in our communities are spiritually, mentally, and physically healthy. Our youth feel safe and empowered to lead significant lives. All relationships are nurtured, and people feel connected to one another and responsible in building a sense of community for all.

Current Strategic Priorities:

  • Develop and implement a model utilizing current and future YMCA sites (including YMCA community complex) as hubs for resident leadership engagement that will transform neighborhoods around the sites.
  • Develop and implement a plan to incorporate services to parents (and seniors where appropriate) where the Y provides services to youth.
  • Serve as a core convener on critical community priorities in the cities the Y serves.
  • Build and strengthen the capacity of the Anaheim Family YMCA Board of Directors committed to serving our diverse communities

Volunteer Leadership: The Y is led by 25 community volunteers and supported by 250-300 program volunteers.

Staff: 230 PT, 30 FT

Program Sites: The Y operates in partnership with two local school districts to offer afterschool enrichment at 12 school site locations, as well as offering sports, swimming, and day camps. Camp Miehana, in the San Bernardino National Forrest, offers summer overnight camp experiences for 110 youth each summer. Just opened in 2021, the new Y Community Complex provides sports and recreation activities, as well as provides a new YMCA gathering place for the community.

Number of People Served Annually: 30,000

Financial Position:  The Y is a non-membership Y that operates in a strong financial position and has continued to do so throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with 61% of revenue from government contracts, 14% from program fees and 7% from community contributions, 25% donations, foundations and special events. The Y also raises funds through four major fundraising events: Annual golf tournament (September net $65 – 75K),  Y Annual Charity Gala (March net $250,000) and an Annual Putting Classic (supporting camping program net $40-50K) In addition, the annual sustaining campaign is generally 8 weeks in May to June (Goal of $300K)

Major Partnerships and Collaborations: The Anaheim Family YMCA partners with 3 school districts (afterschool programs and pool usage), City of Anaheim (funding and facility usage), City of Stanton (facility usage), Disneyland Resort (funder for Avanza, Workforce Development program), City of La Palma (operate their pool program), City of Cypress (operate their pool program), Cypress College (pool usage), Anaheim Zion Lutheran Church and Schools (facility usage), Anaheim Community Foundation (funder), LA84 (funder), LA Clippers (program funder), Gensis Foundation (program funder), Angels Baseball (funder). The Crean Foundation, Samueli Foundation, and the Anaheim Ducks provide capital support.
