Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Fitness Director at the West Shore YMCA oversees the development and operations of the fitness and group exercise programs at the West Shore YMCA, ensuring the programs meet their intended goals. These essential functions will be carried out in keeping with the goals and mission of the YMCA.

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, the Fitness Director’s primary responsibility is managing the operations of the Fitness Center, Weight Room and Group Exercise program as well as the implementation and management of all wellness programming at the West Shore YMCA. This position requires a “hands-on” approach in managing staffing and programming as well as being an ambassador for the West Shore Branch in community events and health fairs. Superior customer service and member retention are essential to the success of this position.  

Qualifications

1. 4-year degree in Exercise Science or related field. Previous supervisory experience in customer service
preferred.
2. 5 years of experience in the health and fitness field.
3. Must be certified in CPR/AED and First Aid.
4. Encouraged to participate in YMCA accredited courses within 2 years of employment.

Essential Functions

1. Demonstrate character development values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in all
decision making, member and staff interactions, meetings, etc.
2. Ensure overall quality customer service.
3. Project a professional image at all times including neat appearance and positive manner.
4. Develop, administer and evaluate safe and age-appropriate wellness programs that are either revenue-driven or available at little or no cost with the focus on member retention.
5. Maintain accurate records of program participants, payment procedures and community members
served.
6. Review and evaluate programs and services on a regular basis.
7. Maintain equipment in all wellness program areas including the Fitness Center, Free Weight Room,
Spin Studio, Group Exercise Studios and Functional Training Center
8. Recruit and maintain properly certified trainers, attendants and instructors for all fitness program
areas.
9. Participates in the planning of the annual budget; manages and implements the approved budget for
wellness and fitness and takes appropriate action to correct variances.
10. Participates in staff meetings and association-wide fitness cabinet meetings.
11. Plan and implement one fundraising event each year and actively assist with other special events held
at the West Shore YMCA.
12. Seek professional and personal growth through training events, certifications and job-related courses.
13. Works Director-On-Duty shifts as assigned, evening and weekend work will be required.
14. Performs other duties as assigned.
