POSITION SUMMARY

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a key member of the YMCA of Metro Denver’s  executive leadership team, responsible for ensuring operational excellence, program impact, and financial sustainability across the Association. Reporting to the President & CEO, the COO provides strategic leadership and direct oversight of branch operations in collaboration with three District Executive Directors, as well as facilities management with the Operations & Risk Director, IT systems with the IT Director, financial oversight with the Controller, and program strategy and impact with the Vice President of Program Strategy & Impact. This position is ideal for a dynamic leader with a proven track record of driving operational efficiency, building strong teams, and demonstrating financial acumen to ensure long-term organizational sustainability. The COO will play a pivotal role in advancing the Y’s mission to build a healthier, stronger Denver Y by elevating program quality, strengthening community partnerships, and fostering a high-performing, mission-driven culture.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, nonprofit management, finance, or related field required; Master’s degree (MBA, Nonprofit Management, or related) strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive leadership experience in a multi-site nonprofit or mission-driven organization, including oversight of operations and finance.
  • Demonstrated success in managing budgets, financial forecasting, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit finance standards.
  • Strong track record of driving operational efficiency and program excellence in a complex organizational environment.
  • Experience leading facilities management, IT, and/or risk management functions.
  • Proven ability to coach, mentor, and develop senior leaders and large teams.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills with staff, volunteers, board members, community partners, and funders.
  • YMCA experience reqiured.
  • YMCA Multi-Team Leader Certification required, YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
  • CPA certification is a plus, though not required.
Essential Functions

Executive Leadership & Strategy

  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the CEO and executive team, helping shape and execute the Association’s long-term vision.
  • Lead operational planning and execution to achieve strategic goals in alignment with the Y’s mission and financial sustainability objectives.
  • Provide staff leadership to the Board and Finance Committee and deliver accurate, timely reports on operations, financials, and program outcomes.

Operations & Program Oversight

  • Oversee all branch operations, ensuring operational excellence, member experience, and high-quality program delivery.
  • Supervise and coach the VP of Program Strategy & Impact, (3) District Executives,
    Facilities Director, IT Director, and the Controller.
  • Ensure the effective design, implementation, and evaluation of programs that align with community needs and YMCA standards.
  • Drive program innovation and continuous improvement through data-informed decision-making.

Financial Leadership.

  • Partner with the Controller to oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance across the Association.
  • Ensure branches and departments meet revenue goals, manage expenses effectively, and achieve positive operating results.
  • Strengthen financial acumen across departments through training and coaching for operational leaders.
  • Oversee risk management, insurance, audits, debt covenant compliance, and regulatory reporting to ensure accountability and transparency. Facilities & Technology
  • Lead Association-wide facilities management, including capital planning, safety, maintenance, and risk management.
  • Oversee IT systems, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and vendor partnerships, ensuring systems support efficient operations and innovation.
  • Ensure facilities and technology are well-maintained, safe, and positioned to support long-term growth and community engagement.

People & Culture

  • Champion staff development, coaching, and succession planning to build a culture of accountability, innovation, and collaboration.
  • Foster diversity, equity, and inclusion by ensuring staff and volunteers reflect the communities we serve.
