Camp Description

Nestled on 70+ acres in northern Frederick County, MD, Camp West Mar offers 4 sleeping cabins, and a variety of amenities and rental options.  Just a few include: a game and rec cabin (pool table, tv for DVDs, foosball, tables for crafts and games, couches), amphitheater, slingshot range, archery range, spider web and no-harness climbing wall, asphalt sports court with fencing, hammock village, sand volleyball court, multi use sports field, gaga ball, creek, walking and hiking trails, high ropes big swing, low ropes, pond for canoeing and fishing, shallow water outdoor swimming pool, large outdoor pavilion with stage and sound system (can seat up to 120 undercover), dining hall with commercial kitchen and indoor seating, bath house.

 

Job Description

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Camps, the Director of Camp West Mar is 
responsible for overseeing the development of all operational areas of Camp West Mar. This 
position will be responsible for recruitment, training and support of all assigned staff in delivering 
the highest level of programming to YMCA members, guests and program participants through 
experienced, quality, efficient and courteous delivery of services. The Director of Camp West Mar
will serve as a member of the Leadership Team for the YMCA of Frederick County association and 
will be integral in strategic planning and development.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years staff management experience.

Essential Functions
  • Staff Development:
    • Work in conjunction with HR to recruit, hire, train and develop personnel and volunteers as 
      needed.
    • Supervise, and schedule staff team as needed.
    • Develop performance standards for all direct reports, conduct annual performance reviews.
  • Core Dept Areas of Responsibility:
    • Directly manage all programming and membership efforts to support membership growth 
      and retention.
    • Must maintain a healthy relationship with key departments that help to support Membership 
      and program areas.
    • Serves as a leader of customer-focused camping operation. Provides exemplary leadership 
      in camper recruitment, service, and superior retention efforts.
    • Develops and maintains contacts in the community with business and civic leaders, 
      interpreting the work of Camp West Mar, soliciting their interest and support, and enlarging 
      the scope of services.
    • Ensures camp operations comply with all governmental requirements and meet and exceed standards.
  • Develops and initiates grant requests to augment program offerings.
    • Actively pursues collaborative relationships with agencies, municipalities and school systems 
      to enhance programing at Camp West Mar.
    • Participates in board committees and meetings as agreed upon with the Executive Director of Camps and VP of Youth Development.
    • Assures own professional growth through reading, study, conference attending, etc.
    • Participates in Association-wide assignments and special responsibilities.
  • Budget and Financial Development:
    • Assist with financial development activities specifically the annual campaign.
    • Responsible for carrying out Camp West Mar master plan, with capital fundraising efforts to 
      reach goal.
    • Administers the budget and exercises necessary controls to assure operations are 
      maintained within the approved budget. When necessary, carries out adjustments in
      operations to assure a surplus from operations.
    • Develop, manage and review departmental budgets related to the operation of Camp West Mar.
  • Facility Management:
    • Ensure management, safety, and maintenance of the facility and equipment. (This could 
      include temporary housing at the Camp West Mar facility to assist in fulfilling these 
      responsibilities)
    • Plans for and supervises the upkeep of the buildings, grounds, equipment and facility 
      working in conjunction with the VP of Facilities.
    • The Director must reside at camp during the summer camp season.
  • Strategic Planning:
    • Assists with strategic planning efforts and development of the annual operating plan.
    • Serve as directed on association task forces or committees.
  • Administration:
    • Perform quality work within given deadlines and expectations with or without direct 
      supervision.
    • Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating 
      work efforts with other appropriate individuals.
    • Gather data and reports as required for assigned program areas.
    • Ensure branding, communication and marketing meet Association standards for all 
      responsible programs.
    • Ensure that all program course information is prepared for inclusion into the data 
      base/operating system.
    • Responsible for all administrative paperwork and records for program reporting.
  • Risk Management:
    • Assure compliance with state and local regulations. Ensure that program standards, 
      emergency action plans and other safety protocols are met and safety procedures are 
      followed.
    • Making sure YMCA policies and procedures are adhered to both by self and within areas of 
      responsibility.
    • Ensures all program operations are consistent with association procedures, including 
      insurance, accidents, purchasing, personnel, and accounting systems.
    • Works in conjunction with the Aquatics Director to ensure compliance and consistency with association best practices.
  • Program Team:
    • Interact professionally with other employees, members, program participants, volunteers, 
      and other individuals within the community, always being mindful of the YMCA’s mission, 
      vision and values.
    • Serve effectively as a team leader/contributor on all assignments.
    • Oversee and support various YMCA special events.

Required Certifications
  • Blood borne Pathogen Training
  • CPR, First Aid, AED Certification
  • Code of Conduct Training
  • Frederick County Pool Operator’s License
  • One specialty certification (archery, lifeguard, canoe, wilderness first aid or ropes)
  • Completion of YUSA Multi-Team Branch Leader Certification within two years of start date 
    of employment
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the YMCA insurance carrier with an 
    acceptable driving record
