Cultivate strong partnerships with key stakeholders to enhance the YMCA's reputation and further its mission. Guide and inspire a dedicated staff team passionate about serving the community. And prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals, especially youth, by exceeding industry standards and ensuring full compliance.  

The YMCA Board is seeking a visionary and community-minded CEO with proven leadership experience.  The CEO must have the ability to develop and implement strategic plans that align with the YMCA’s mission and long-term goals. Have excellent communication, relationship-building, and collaboration skills. Must have a track record of success in achieving measurable outcomes and driving organizational growth. Coupled with a deep understanding of the YMCA's values and a commitment to its mission.

Qualifications

Criteria for Candidates:

  1. Accredited 4-year college degree or equivalent experience.
  2. Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  3. Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
  4. Must be able to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  5. Have the ability to develop innovative programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered for both economy and effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which we serve.
  6. Strategic planning and Fundraising experience including annual campaigns and the securing of grants.
  7. Fiscally sound business management approach.
  8. A proven record of accomplishment of progressive budgetary leadership and advanced fiscal management practices.
  9. YMCA Organizational Leader Certification or ability to achieve within 3 years.
Essential Functions

Key Performance Objectives 

Fiscal Management: Use high-level financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth and stability, while consistently leading the organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders to lead their departments to successful financial operation. Develop and implement stewardship strategies. Key Competencies: Fiscal Management, Critical Thinking & Decision Making, Developing Self & Others, Philanthropy 

Improve Operating Performance: Engage the board and appropriate staff to develop an annual tactical plan for identifying and achieving key goals and objectives towards operating with safe, relevant and sustainable practices. Quickly address issues that may arise, forecast future needs, and manage and direct the Y’s operations and activities. Key Competencies: Developing Self & Others, Critical Thinking & Decision Making, Innovation 

Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: Work effectively with volunteers, community leaders, and key staff, to create and develop a strategic plan that addresses the needs of the communities served by the Y and includes defined organizational strategies, a clear implementation plan with deliverables, and measurable goals. Key Competencies: Change Leadership, Communication & Influence, Critical Thinking & Decision Making, Program/Project Management 

Steward Fundraising Efforts: Develop and implement an annual fundraising plan that will establish the YMCA as a leading nonprofit organization within the community through the engagement of members, volunteers, staff, and donors. Identify the need for successful capital fundraising, while taking the organization to a new level of effectiveness and impact in annual giving and endowment. Key Competencies: Philanthropy, Engaging Community, Communication & Influence 

Build and Lead Staff: Ensure a talent development system is in place and executed effectively with cultural competence. Hire, motivate, nurture, retain, and hold staff accountable for key objectives. Work towards recruiting, retaining, developing and promoting staff. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie, connection, and sense of mission and purpose. Create a learning organization to help staff achieve their highest potential. Key Competencies: Developing Self & Others, Inclusion, Emotional Maturity, Change Leadership 

Position the Y as a Vital Partner for Community Change: Serve as an ambassador for the mission, purpose, and vision for the YMCA within the community. Possess the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds, while always upholding the highest standards and values of the Y. Ensure your Y is seen as a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose, and each other. Branch/Facility Information 
The Greater Carbondale YMCA is a 60,000 square foot building in the downtown of Carbondale, PA. It has 3 floors with YMCA programs using our lower level, first, and second floors. There is a separate Physical Therapy office on our 3rd floor. They have a large indoor pool with water slide, two basketball gymnasiums, a 5000 sq ft Wellness Center, a 1400 sq ft fitness/group exercise room. They are home to a large childcare program serving well over 250 families a year. They also have a full commercial kitchen, a community park and splash pad. They have ample parking in our 3 parking lots as well.

Area Amenities and Community Benefits

The City of Carbondale is located in northeastern Lackawanna County. It has a commercial area with a solid stock of commercial buildings lined along several streets. A portion of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail (LRHT) is located one block from the northern end of downtown (right at the edge of the Y’s Community Park) and runs approximately 1.4 miles north to a connection with the D&H Rail Trail in Simpson.  The D&H Rail Trail (now officially part of the overall LRHT) runs another 38 miles to the New York State border.  Nearby outdoor recreation places include Merli-Sarnoski, Lackawanna, and Aylesworth State parks. Elk Mountain and Montage Mountain ski resorts.  Hotel Anthracite, located downtown, is a full-service hotel and banquet facility and a significant tourism asset.  Carbondale is a city of firsts, the first city chartered in northeastern Pennsylvania (before both Scranton and Wilkes-Barre), the location of the first million-dollar company (the D&H Canal Company), the first deep underground mine, and the first coal breaker.  Carbondale’s downtown reflects its rich urban history with its architecture and commercial building stock. The city has a mix of retail businesses, a hotel, and attractions that would serve outdoor recreation visitors-including convenience stores, restaurants and bars, a library, a historical museum, and a river that is a popular fishing locale.

Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000 annually

Benefits: Retirement contribution (7% Y match, 5% employee contribution), PTO plan, health plan (75% paid by the Y/ 25% paid by employee) and other benefits per personnel policy included. Vision and dental are available. 

Residency Expectation: The CEO is expected to be highly engaged and visible in our community. Living in the YMCA’s service area is required.
