Position Summary:

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a strategic member of the senior leadership team, responsible for overseeing all financial, accounting, IT, and risk management functions of the organization.  This role ensures financial integrity, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance across the YMCA’s business units and subsidiaries.  The CFO partners closely with the President & CEO, senior leadership, Board committees, and external stakeholders to support the mission and long-term sustainability of the Y.

Qualifications
  1. Master’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration or related field. Or bachelor's degree and 10 years related experience.  CPA certification strongly preferred.
  2. Minimum 7–10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
    Knowledge and understanding of general business matters including budget development, cash management and investments, GAAP, non-profit compliance, and business taxes.
  3. Strong knowledge of computer technology including computerized accounting systems; expert skills in QuickBooks and Excel required.
  4. Ability to review and negotiate contracts including but not limited to insurance (Property, Liability, Workers Compensation, Health, Dental), equipment leases, rental agreements, and vendor contracts.
  5. Understanding of bond financing, and debt covenant compliance.
  6. Experience overseeing IT systems and leading cross-functional teams.
  7. Experience in effectively managing a staff team.
  8. Excellent analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
  9. Familiarity with grant reporting and donor fund tracking.
  10. Knowledge of risk management, insurance and human resources policies.

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Strategy & Oversight

  • Lead the YMCA’s financial planning, forecasting, and reporting processes.
  • Lead the organization’s annual budgeting process.  Provide training and guidance to department leaders to ensure effective participation and understanding.  
  • Build financial acumen across departments through training and support.
  • Monitor financial performance and provide analysis and recommendations to the CEO and senior leadership.
  • Oversee the accounting team and manage all financial operations, including payroll, receivables/payables, cash flow, and audits.
  • Ensure compliance with general accounting, IRS, state, and federal reporting requirements, including 990s, 941s, and other filings.

Audit, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Coordinate and oversee external audits, internal controls, and adherence to legal and regulatory standards.
  • Lead reporting and compliance for tax-exempt bonds, debt covenants, and government grants.
  • Manage risk, insurance policies, and ensure proper financial documentation and recordkeeping.

Investment & Asset Management

  • Support the management of operating cash, reserves, endowments, and capital funds in alignment with Board policy.
  • Serve as staff liaison to Finance, Investment, and Audit Committees of the Board; prepare meeting materials and financial presentations.

IT & Systems Management

  • Oversee IT infrastructure, vendor relationships, and cybersecurity, in partnership with third-party providers.
  • Develop and maintain data privacy, WISP policies, and access controls across organizational systems.

Human Resources & Benefits Support

  • Collaborate with HR leadership on compensation analysis, benefits management, and cost modeling.
  • Provide financial insight into HR planning, policy implementation, and performance metrics.

Program & Facility Oversight

  • Manage financial operations of the YMCA’s Single Room Occupancy (SRO) residence, including compliance, budgeting, and audits.

Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop performance metrics and financial models to support strategic planning and operational decision-making.
  • Foster strong relationships with auditors, banks, vendors, and community partners.
  • Represent the YMCA at key meetings, events, and within the local community as needed.
Required Certifications

CPA certification strongly preferred.

CPR and First Aid within 30 days.
