Job Description

Under the direction of the Senior Experience Director, the Director of Health & Wellness is responsible for the direct oversight of the wellness department including Wellness Center Associates, personal trainers, and group exercise instructors as well as the recruitment and onboarding process.

Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in health and wellness programming, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Proven ability to recruit, train, supervise, coach, and evaluate a diverse team of wellness professionals and instructors.
  • Demonstrated experience managing budgets, controlling expenses, and achieving revenue goals.
  • Strong skills in program design, implementation, and evaluation, including using data and metrics to improve outcomes.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance, repair coordination, and safe operation of fitness equipment.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, schedules, and projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication, marketing, and promotional skills, including experience developing program materials, newsletters, and outreach campaigns.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with members, staff, and community partners, with a commitment to delivering high-quality member service.
  • Experience working with special populations, including Active Older Adults and chronic disease prevention participants.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with membership or program management software (e.g., Daxko, Mindbody, or similar).
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays as needed.
  • Commitment to the YMCA mission, values, and leadership competencies, with a willingness to obtain Multi Team/Branch Leader certification within the required timeframe.
Essential Functions
  • Responsible for the Wellness department including supervision of staff, programs and budget responsibilities
    Direct supervision of all group exercise instructors and programs including LiveStrong
  • Responsible for the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, supervision, recognition and termination recommendation for all Wellness staff under the direction of the Sr. Experience Director
  • Ensure all group exercise instructors are in compliance with the minimum education, certification, and/or continuing education requirements of the department
  • Oversee general management, cleanliness and upkeep of the group exercise and spinning studios, Wellness Center and related equipment
  • Inventory and order all operating supplies for the department
  • Assume responsibility for the development and marketing of health and fitness programming including brochures, incentive programs, bulletin boards, email newsletters, etc.
  • Supervise floor staff in the wellness department ensuring that the wellness center is adequately staffed to answer or address any member concerns.
  • Will execute wellness staff meetings and continuing education programs for personal trainers and wellness floor staff
  • Will teach or lead classes in the wellness department and have scheduled hours covering the wellness department at least 10 per week, which may include weekends.
  • Responsible for preventive maintenance of equipment and ensuring timely repair of equipment to minimize disruption of service to members.
  • Assume responsibility for supplies of wellness-related marketing collateral including program brochures, workout cards, orientation folders, office supplies, etc.
  • Design, promote and implement safe and effective fitness programs consistent with members’ interests and abilities.
  • Ensure that the Wellness Center and related programming meet the highest standards of safety, risk management and member service
  • Assume overall management of the New Member Orientation program including schedule creation, facilitation and follow up for all new members as well as providing orientations as needed for new members. Serve as the primary contact for all Active Older Adults programming including scheduling and leading of exercise programs.
  • Execute other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Branch Director
  • Work with the Executive Director to develop, monitor and achieve Wellness budget goals annually. Accept responsibility for the control of expenditures and production of revenues. Ensure that all departments and programs under your supervision meet the highest standards of program and member service quality and safety.
  • Employ a range of metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of wellness programs and recommend curriculum improvements as needed.
  • Recommend salary recognition, promotion, or termination as necessary and ensure that proper training and growth opportunities are available to all staff under your supervision.
  • Participate in the YMCA of the USA Leadership Competency Career Development Program and obtain Multi-Team/Branch Leader certification.
  • Work with the Branch team to achieve Annual Campaign goals.
  • Participate as requested in the Association Service Center and branch committees, cabinets, and task forces.
  • Attend regular scheduled meetings with the Wellness Mission Impact Team, Branch Leadership Staff, and one-on-ones with the Senior Executive Director

Required Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health Promotion, Recreation Management, or related field required; or equivalent work experience
  • Nationally recognized fitness certification(s) (e.g., ACE, ACSM, AFAA, NASM) and current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications required; specialty certifications in group exercise, personal training, or chronic disease prevention preferred.
