Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the guidance and supervision of the Sports Director, the Youth Sports Assistant is responsible for providing direction and supervision of each season’s program sports and summer camps.

Qualifications
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to have transportation to the site that they will be supervising.
  • Adequate availability of some sort of communication device.
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: basketball, soccer, and/or camps.
  • Alarm/Emergency Procedures training within 90 days of hire and annually thereafter.
  • CPR, First Aid and Child Abuse Prevention training within 90 days of hire and biannually thereafter.
  • New Employee Orientation within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
Essential Functions

The Youth Sports Assistant is expected to fulfill the following functions:

  • Supervise a targeted group of participants in one or more of the following divisions: Itty Bitty(pre-K), K-1, 2-3, 4-5, and Junior High.
  • Participate in preparation, setup and cleanup of youth sports sites, facilities, and equipment.
  • Conduct games and activities related to youth sports, which include officiating and site supervision.
  • Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness guidelines and will continually check on condition of equipment and site cleanliness.
  • Attend sports staff meetings and training.
  • Assist the Sports Director during the summer with sports and science camps.
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies and will take all necessary precautions to report any potential abuse or issues.
  • Maintains good and active communication with the Program Directors and Staff Leads and plays a role in identifying solutions to problems dealing with the sport. 

In addition to the essential duties and responsibilities, the Youth Sports Assistant will:                                                  

  • Maintain positive relations with parents and other staff and use the Y voice by using positive adjectives and authentic and nurturing word choices.
  • Model relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions and will greet everyone with eye contact and a smile.
  • The Youth Sports Assistant will live the Y mission by developing positive internal relationships and treating all staff with the utmost respect.
  • Be able to lift or move 50 pounds.
  • Be willing to contact potential participants and their families about upcoming programs.
  • The Youth Sports Assistant will accurately report time on timesheets and assist the YMCA in being fiscally responsible in turning off gym lights and maximizing the full life of sports equipment.
