This position is responsible for planning, managing, and directing the swim team and for ensuring the safety of participants while operating within the policies, procedures, and practices of the YMCA. This position will need to coach, lead and motivate athletes in practice groups and at meets, promoting improvement and growth. In addition, this full-time position’s off-deck responsibilities will include administrative and operational tasks vital to team management, growth and culture.
· Competitive swimming experience is preferred.
· 3-5 years competitive coaching experience required.
· Candidates must have current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or Safety Training for Swim Coaches (can be completed after hire).
· USA Swim Coach certifications and YMCA Principles & Practices of Swimming and Diving are required (can be completed after hire).
· Knowledge of the competitive strokes and techniques, competitive swimming, and general water safety.
· Ability to coach all skill levels is required.
· Must be able to work in a group setting.
· Knowledgeable in Team Unify and Meet Manager required.
· Able to hold coach’s meetings and train coaches as needed.
· Coaches and instructs swimmers in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared practices and workouts accordingly.
· Plans practice schedule, meets, and team functions including, but not limited to team bonding events and the end of season celebration.
· Schedules evaluations of potential swimmers and finds appropriate placement for each child on the team.
· Advises and supports assistant coaches as needed.
· Create an environment that welcomes all types of swimmers from varying levels and backgrounds.
· Responds professionally to parental concerns and other issues that may arise.
· Builds effective, authentic relationships with swimmers and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourage parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
· Dress appropriately at all practices, events, and meets.
· Conveys information on the swim team, aquatics programs and schedules.
· Attends practices and swim meets as required. There will be travel to most swim meets.
· Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, swim meet reports, etc.).
· Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
· Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
· Organizes and puts away needed swim team equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
· Demonstrates and supports the objectives of the YMCA as embodied in the mission statement and values.
· Other duties to support the aquatics department as assigned, which will include but are not limited to assisting with instructing swimming lessons as needed outside the winter season.
