Job Description

Since 1858, the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley has been an integral part of the Quad Cities area. The qualified candidate will possess at a minimum:

  • Demonstrated ability to create a member-focused culture and model relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Ability to build solid relationships with diverse groups of people and increase program participation and retention.
  • Strong ability to effectively communicate with program participants, members and community partners.
  • Ability to foster a climate of innovation and resolve problems to ensure member satisfaction.
  • Prior experience with staff supervision and development.
  • Prior experience in group fitness/wellness and training clients.

The Corporate Wellness Director is responsible for supervision and direct involvement of all land, water and medically based (Livestrong, Parkinson's, Enhanced Fitness, etc.) fitness/wellness programs for the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley. The Director will oversee administration of the department, program budget, staffing, scheduling and evaluation of instructors and programs. This position will also lead and oversee the association corporate membership program, Y@Work. He/she will develop, implement and manage programs in line with current trends, ensuring that all fitness staff operate in accordance with association policies, guidelines and strategic objectives to ensure the safety and satisfaction of participants. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Responsible for supervision of all group fitness instructors.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position is expected to be able to successfully perform all physical activities necessary to perform essential and related functions of the position including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. This position is expected to be able to demonstrate all training aspects of a workout, which can be described as medium to strenuous work and will vary by client. Must be able to frequently lift a minimum of 50 pounds efficiently and safely. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to talk and/or hear. The employee will regularly be required to see at close and distant vision, have good peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of the job, the employee will primarily work indoors and regularly be exposed to moderate temperatures and perform work near and around fitness equipment with moving mechanical parts and swimming pools. The noise level can vary from quiet to loud depending upon the programs and activities being performed. 

Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Fitness, or related field preferred.
  2. Minimum 1 year of demonstrated supervisory experience is preferred.
  3. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, volunteers, and members.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
  5. Possess excellent administration and organizational skills to simultaneously manage and complete multiple projects and programs.
  6. Able to respond to critical incidents and to act swiftly in emergency situations.
Essential Functions
  1. Serve as a role model to members and Y staff and live the YMCA mission, vision and values of the YMCA movement. 
  2. Model and enforce facility policies and put the Y mission in action and provide extraordinary member service.
  3. Develop, maintain, and manage budget in accordance with department and association goals. 
  4. Develop, implement and promote new and existing group fitness programs to meet the needs of the community and achieve association strategic objectives.
  5. Schedule programs among branch facilities to assure equitable usage of space and to meet the needs of each branch community. 
  6. Promote membership enrollment and assure careful assimilation of new members into new and existing programs.
  7. Responsible for growth of Y@Work program through connection with local businesses to gain enrollment in program. 
  8. Maintain a professional image within the community and inform/educate all constituent groups about the mission, goals, action plans, programs, and charitable purpose of the Y.
  9. Ensure the quality and consistency of health enhancement programs.
  10. Recruit, select, develop, supervise and evaluate fitness staff.
  11. Provide accurate records and appropriate reports outlining program performance.
  12. Manage facility and equipment resources for program and usage.
  13. Perform other duties related to member service, communications, public relations, special events, and fundraising as assigned.
  14. Recommend equipment and supply purchases for program area.
  15. Direct medically based/disease management programs such as Livestrong, Parkinson's and Enhanced Fitness programs.
  16. Instruct any fitness program and/or class as needed.
  17. Participate in and solicit others to participate in necessary YMCA financial development efforts, specifically the Annual Campaign.
  18. Maintain certifications listed under Certificates and Other Requirements. 
  19. Adherence to all policies and procedures of the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley. 
  20. Understand and follow all safety rules and regulations including knowledge of emergency procedures and location of emergency equipment 
  21. Regular and timely adherence to respective schedule/meetings.
  22. All other duties as assigned by the COO.
Required Certifications
  1. Must be able to pass background check
  2. CPR/First Aid/AED certification*
  3. Maintain national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction
  4. Les Mills certification or equivalent. 

*Note: If not currently certified, must obtain certification within 30 days of hire. The * noted certification training programs are provided by YMCA staff.
