The Opportunity
We are looking for a skilled and enthusiastic leader who can build upon the foundation of this healthy $850,000 YMCA led by a committed board and a dedicated staff team. The Hoerner YMCA CEO will be a highly regarded and visible leader within the community and the position provides an exceptional opportunity to increase community impact.
The next leader is fortunate to oversee a fully renovated and modernized Y. The Board of Directors embarked on a $1.2M, three-phase, capital campaign to modernize its 1975 facility to serve the community for years to come. Thanks to the commitment of the board and a generous community, the facility boasts a new classroom, multi-purpose room that doubles as a teen center, large group fitness space, new women's and men's locker rooms, and a new sauna area that includes one private showering/changing area.
The CEO will align the day-to-day work of the Y with long-term strategic goals, while expanding membership, programs, and services to address community needs. They will lead a small but strong staff team and manage a solid operation. The successful candidate will also show an ability to create positive and strategic relationships with influential leaders and community members and leverage those relationships to enhance support for the Y mission. The CEO is expected to uphold the highest standards and values of the Y; able to maintain a culture of integrity, high ethical standards, accountability, and performance, creating a spirit of inclusiveness.

Keokuk YMCA Facts
The Y was organized in 1893 and has served the Keokuk area for over 130 years. The facility opened in January 1975, and is named after R.N. Dick Hoerner, Sr., a 17-year YMCA president and head of the 1972 Challenge Fund Campaign. Over the past few years, a number of improvements have been made to reflect the YMCA’s current usage and community needs.

Hoerner YMCA’s one main facility is 39,000 square feet. The YMCA is set to complete its extensive $1.2 million renovation of the facility in 2025. Additionally, another $200,000+ in infrastructure such as roofs, basketball courts, etc. has been added. There is a large cardio area, strength area and a 6-lane pool. The Teen Center averaged sixty-two kids per day in 2023.

Two years ago, converted our two racquetball courts into two meeting rooms on the main floor (a Teen Center and a classroom space) and added a second-floor group exercise room of 1,600 square feet. Cost of this renovation: $450,000. Additionally, we have put another $200,000+ in infrastructure such as roofs, basketball courts, etc.

Keokuk is located in a tri-state area of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri and it is the home of the only National Cemetery in Iowa. Keokuk is a River City along the Mississippi River and is the location of Lock and Dam No. 19. The Keokuk Energy Center and Dam of Keokuk, Iowa is the largest privately owned and operated dam and hydroelectric generating plant on the Mississippi River.
Situated on the bluffs of the Mississippi River, Keokuk’s natural beauty, rich heritage and friendly people make the Keokuk area a wonderful place to live and work. Convenient retail, services and entertainment, the downtown business district has a warm, hometown feel while providing shopping, services, and entertainment opportunities.
Historic and community attractions include the statue of Chief Keokuk, George M. Verity Riverboat Museum, Miller House Museum, the Grand Theatre, the Swing Bridge with a view of the lock and dam, and you can take a walking tour of homes along Grand Avenue.
Rand and Verity parks provide panoramic overlooks of the Mississippi, and a number of neighborhoods offer a magnificent vista of the mighty Mississippi.

Position Description
The Hoerner YMCA’s Board of Directors is seeking an innovative, strategic and community minded individual to serve as its next President & CEO. The new CEO will be a skilled and enthusiastic leader able to build on the successful past of the YMCA, promote a culture of excellence within the YMCA and continue to enhance the image of the YMCA in the community.
The CEO is responsible for the development, implementation and articulation of the mission, vision, and goals of the YMCA. This involves building a culture that supports and retains outstanding staff and an active, volunteer Board of Directors. The CEO is expected to be visible in the community and active in the development of meaningful community collaborations with other community organizations, public sector entities and businesses. The CEO should position the YMCA to be viewed in the community as a highly respected, charitable partner with a strong stake in solving community issues. The CEO is responsible for all areas of fundraising, strategic planning, budget development, organizational development, program development, marketing, and the overall image of the YMCA in partnership with the board. Other key areas of responsibility include program development, membership growth, and volunteer and staff development.
The President & CEO will work to advance the feelings of connectedness both internally within the Y and externally in the greater community and they will lead collaborative efforts to grow and maintain productive working relationships that enhance the Y’s reputation and further its mission and cause.

Salary Range: $65,000 – 70,000 annually, plus a monthly stipend toward healthcare benefits.
Benefits: All employees who meet eligibility requirements are enrolled in the Retirement Plan. The Hoerner YMCA contributes an amount equal to 5% of the employees’ compensation. In addition, each eligible employee is required to contribute an amount equal to 3% of their compensation. Access to a 403(b) Smart Account is available upon hire. Six national holidays plus one floating holiday, vacation accrual starting at six months, and accrued six leave.
Residency Expectation: The CEO is expected to be highly engaged and visible in our community. Living in the YMCA’s service area is required.
