Aquatics Director

We are looking for an experienced and dynamic aquatic professional to manage pool operations for our onsite and offsite aquatic programs
Job Description

Under the direction of our Senior Director of Aquatics, the Aquatics Director will manage operations for the three indoor pools (Forese, Scooter and Valles) including supervision of lifeguards and aquatic instructors.  Additionally, during the summer our aquatics programs expand to include the Waterfront at Camp Y-Ki, and swim lessons at the Steve Benko pool at Waveny Park.  

This position is member-facing, needing a Director who communicates effectively with our members and program participants.  Additionally, this role partners with our competitive team coaches regarding scheduling of practices, meets/events, and special events.

Candidates should have experience in planning and developing program offerings, with a focus on safety as well as fun.

The Aquatics Director will oversee aquatic staff to ensure proper training, evaluation and oversight, will perform lifeguard drills and provide in-service trainings, and will fill in as lifeguard and/or instructor as needed.

Qualifications

·         A minimum of 1 year of supervisory and aquatic leadership experience.

·         Strong interpersonal skills.

·         Excellent communication and organizational skills.

·         Demonstrates exceptional time management abilities, capable of managing various tasks concurrently and meeting timelines.

·         Must be able to present oneself professionally with peers, staff, community, and members.

·         Current YMCA and Red Cross certifications in First Aid, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer, and Lifeguard/Swim Instructor required.

·         Strong computer skills; experience with Daxko, and proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Publisher.

Essential Functions

Member Experience and Program Development

·         Plan, grow, develop and schedule mission-driven program offerings within the framework of policies and procedures established by the Association.

·         Timely and clear communication with members and program participants.

·         Provide progress reports to all swim lesson participants, including Rainbow Station swim lessons, ahead of next session registration.

·         Communicate regularly with competitive coaches regarding pool schedules, needs of department, and regarding all meets. In addition, open communications with other directors on family events and supervisor concerning special YMCA events.

·         Plan and implement family aquatic events.

·         Resolve member and participant issues professionally and promptly.

 Team Management

·         Communicate regularly with staff, co-workers, contact areas, and supervisor.

·         Ensure instructors and lifeguards are/remain current in all certifications.

·         Fill in as instructor and lifeguard, as needed.

·         With support of the Senior Director of Aquatics, responsible for the hiring, firing, training and timely evaluations of all aquatic staff under your supervision.

·         Execute lifeguard drills and in-services drills (to include all camp waterfront as well).

·         Plan regular Aquatic Department staff meetings with supervisor follow up. 

Fiscal and Risk Management

·         With supervisor, prepare budget for Aquatic Department: Lifeguards, Aquatic Safety Instruction, and Family Swim.

·          Responsible for the expense of hiring and training of waterfront director and lifeguards at all camps. 

Operations

·         Continue Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor, workshops, safety training courses, to keep staff certified and to recruit new staff.

·         Fill in as a lifeguard or instructor when needed.

·         Aid in the selection of Waterfront Director for summer camps at the YMCA facilities.

·         Organize lifeguard certification book and send out notices to staff regarding expirations on certifications; organize and document: pool tally sheets, fish pass system, member swim levels, and all pool documents.

·         Responsible for creating, managing, and communicating pool schedules for Forese, Scooter, Valles Pools, and Free Swim, as well as New Canaan High School pool usage.

·         Provide holiday pool schedules in a timely manner and carefully review them before updating on website and GroupExPro.

·         Work with marketing department to promote events, and free swim activities.

·         Continue to acquire the knowledge relating to aquatic safety, free swim, and pool maintenance.

·         Maintain facility cleanliness and integrity by vacuuming, cleaning drains, and hosing decks. 

·         Attend all professional staff meetings to keep informed of all activities at the YMCA. 

·         Attend YMCA trainings to achieve next level certification.

Required Certifications

·         Current YMCA and Red Cross certifications in First Aid, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer, and Lifeguard/Swim Instructor required.
