YMCA Storer Camps offers educational programs, character development and team building services to youth and adults through our three core programs: Outdoor Environmental Education, Summer Overnight Camp, and Specialty Programs & Group Retreats. Located in southeast Michigan on 1,200 acres surrounding Stony Lake, our 15 unique ecosystems provide a natural learning environment for campers, students, teachers and families year round.
Job Description

The incumbent is responsible for lending support to the entire Summer Camp staff and structure.  The Sports Specialist is responsible for the safe operations and supervision of the Team & Target Sports programs and activities and for enforcing all state and licensing regulations.

Qualifications

Must be at least 19 years of age and a High School graduate.  Must be skilled in the teaching of archery, riflery, and ax throwing.  Must have current certifications in CPR and First Aid; lifeguard certification is encouraged.

Essential Functions

Oversee the instruction of Sport lessons during class period and take the lead in all camp sport activities during designated periods.

Train all camp staff in the proper and safe techniques of archery, riflery and ax throwing.

Provide oversight for the maintenance, inventory, storage, and replacement of sport equipment.

Support growing a culture of respectful use of sports equipment and maintenance thereof, the skills required for the safe usage and enjoyment of the equipment and the process utilized to build skills and competency in the appropriate staff and campers.

Provide, enforce and maintain the safety standards and regulations of the Sport Program.

Responsible for care and upkeep of all sports equipment.

Inform the Summer Camp Director of any events that may affect the overall well-being of campers and staff.

Maintain a written log of daily incidents and camp-related phone calls.

·         Assist with cabin coverage responsibilities when not scheduled for sport responsibilities.

Follow all camp policies and procedures.

·         Any other duties assigned that enhance any/all camp programs and the experiences of all campers and participants at YMCA Storer Camps.

The employee frequently is required to sit and reach, and must be able to move around the work environment.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
