It’s That Time of Year: How to Get Kids (and Parents) Ready for Back-to-School Season

As the final popsicles melt and the last beach towels are shaken out, parents everywhere start eyeing the calendar with a mix of nostalgia and relief. Summer may be winding down, but a fresh start is just around the corner—making it the perfect time to reset routines and prepare the whole family for the school year ahead.

To help make the transition smooth and stress-free, YMCA experts are sharing their top tips for starting the new school year on a strong, positive note.

Ease into the New Routine Before the Start of School

The start of the school year is a big adjustment for the whole family. Make sure to discuss upcoming changes in bedtime, wake-up time, and after-school schedules with everyone. Consider shifting bedtime and wake-up times a week or two before school starts to help everyone adjust smoothly. Gradually adjusting sleep schedules helps kids feel more rested and ready when the first day arrives.

Beating the Back-to-School Frenzy

Avoid the last-minute scramble by getting organized early! Start sorting through school supplies and clothes ahead of time to see what you already have and what needs replacing. Set up a cozy, distraction-free homework zone that helps your child stay focused, such as a comfy chair, good lighting, and a splash of personality. Use colorful bins, fun labels, and let your kids take the lead in decorating and organizing their space. When they help create it, they’re more likely to use it!

Fueling Their Day

Good nutrition plays a big role in helping kids stay energized, focused, and ready to learn. Start with balanced breakfasts and pack snacks that power them through the day—think whole grains, fruits, and proteins. Easy options like carrot sticks, apple slices, and string cheese can also go a long way. And don’t forget to toss in a refillable water bottle to keep them hydrated, alert, and feeling their best.

Plan Ahead for Before and Afterschool Peace of Mind

Whether your days start early, end late, or change from week to week, having a reliable before and afterschool plan can bring calm to the chaos. Knowing your child is in a safe, enriching environment not only gives you peace of mind—it helps your whole day run more smoothly.

The Y’s early learning, child care, and out-of-school time programs are led by caring staff who understand child development, family needs, and the importance of a safe, welcoming space. From homework help to hands-on fun, they are there to help your child succeed—and make your daily routine a little easier. And Don’t Forget to Celebrate!

Turn the start of a new school year into something to celebrate—not stress over. Simple traditions like a special first-day breakfast, a surprise note in their lunchbox, or a fun family dinner at the end of the first week can give kids something to look forward to and help create lasting, positive memories around going back to school. For older kids, consider including them in planning a back-to-school outing, setting personal goals together, or simply checking in over a favorite meal. These gestures, big or small, help make the transition meaningful and memorable at every age.
