Job Description

The Summit Area YMCA is seeking a skilled, dependable Maintenance Engineer to manage daily maintenance and facility needs primarily at our Summit YMCA branch. This full-time, hands-on role reports to the Facilities Director and also supports major maintenance projects or issues at the Berkeley Heights YMCA, Springfield Community Pool, The Learning Circle YMCA, and Association Services as needed.

You’ll perform repairs, coordinate preventive maintenance, work with vendors, and provide hands-on support and technical guidance to maintenance staff across these sites. You may also serve as a team lead, helping coordinate work priorities and guide maintenance projects.

What You’ll Do:

  • Conduct daily facility walkthroughs to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns.Perform preventive maintenance and general repairs involving HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry, and pool equipment within your training and experience.
  • Manage maintenance requests and work orders, keeping accurate records and communicating progress.
  • Help coordinate daily work priorities with maintenance and housekeeping staff and provide hands-on support.
  • Coordinate vendor services, required inspections, and corrective work with the Facilities Director.
  • Work with Aquatics staff to support safe, reliable pool operations.
  • Maintain supplies, tools, and equipment and recommend needed repairs or improvements.
  • Assist with facility projects, program and event setups, seasonal grounds upkeep, and snow and ice removal.
  • Respond to urgent maintenance needs and facility emergencies, including after-hours calls as needed.
  • Work closely with branch leadership and program staff to minimize disruptions and maintain a welcoming environment.

Pay, Schedule & Work Environment

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with an annual salary range of $52,000–$62,000.


A flexible schedule is required, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and additional hours to respond to urgent maintenance needs or after-hours facility emergencies. While this role is responsible for maintenance at the Summit branch, the maintenance team works together to support all Summit Area YMCA branches as needed.

The role involves indoor and outdoor work, standing and walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and lifting or moving up to 50 pounds, with reasonable accommodations available.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical or vocational training in building maintenance or a related trade preferred.
  • At least three years of hands-on experience in building maintenance, facilities operations, or a related field required. Experience in a YMCA, fitness or recreation center, or facility with pools preferred.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general building maintenance, including the ability to troubleshoot problems and identify when specialized service is needed.
  • Ability to independently prioritize maintenance needs, manage multiple work orders, and follow projects through completion.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance schedules, facility inspections, vendor coordination, and inventory management preferred.
  • Ability to serve as a technical resource and coordinate daily work with maintenance and housekeeping staff. Previous experience as a maintenance lead preferred.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, and chemicals, including their safe and effective use.
    Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical instructions, equipment manuals, procedures, and other maintenance documents.
  • Strong communication, organizational, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications and the ability to complete electronic work orders, inspection logs, and maintenance records.
  • Experience obtaining estimates, purchasing supplies, and monitoring expenses within an approved budget preferred.
  • Certified Pool Operator certification and appropriate Boiler Operator license preferred, or ability to obtain within 120 days of employment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and respond to after-hours facility emergencies as needed.
  • Ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and respond effectively to safety concerns and emergency situations.
Essential Functions
  • Serve as the primary maintenance contact for assigned branch(es), responding to maintenance requests and independently prioritizing daily facility needs.
  • Conduct daily walk-throughs and routine inspections of the buildings, pools, building systems, grounds, and equipment to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and general repairs to building systems, equipment, furniture, fixtures, and facility structures.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and pool equipment issues within the scope of training and experience. Coordinate specialized services with the Facilities Director when needed.
  • Maintain the branch’s preventive maintenance schedule and work order queue, ensuring requests are prioritized, completed, documented, and communicated appropriately.
  • Serve as a daily point person and technical resource for maintenance and housekeeping staff, helping coordinate work priorities and providing hands-on assistance. Communicate staffing, coverage, and work completion concerns to the Facilities Director.
  • Monitor the cleanliness and overall appearance of the facility and coordinate needed maintenance and housekeeping support to maintain a safe, welcoming environment.
  • Coordinate routine vendor and contractor services with the Facilities Director, including obtaining estimates, arranging access, communicating branch needs, and monitoring work completion.
  • Coordinate required building and equipment inspections, including fire, boiler, pool, health department, and insurance inspections. Maintain inspection records and follow up on corrective actions with the Facilities Director.
    Work with Aquatics staff to coordinate pool maintenance, monitor pool equipment and mechanical systems, and address issues affecting safe and reliable pool operations.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of maintenance supplies, parts, tools, and equipment. Submit purchase requests and maintain purchasing records in accordance with approved budgets and YMCA procedures.
  • Recommend repairs, equipment replacements, and facility improvements to the Facilities Director. Provide information on branch conditions and anticipated needs to support budget development and long-term facilities planning.
  • Coordinate and assist with assigned branch improvement projects, including painting, minor construction, equipment installation, and general facility upkeep.
  • Coordinate and perform seasonal grounds maintenance, including snow and ice removal, landscaping, and upkeep of entrances, sidewalks, and outdoor areas.
  • Coordinate facility setups and breakdowns for programs, meetings, and events, including moving and assembling furniture and equipment. Receive and distribute deliveries as needed.
  • Respond promptly to urgent maintenance issues and facility emergencies, including after-hours calls as needed.
  • Keep the Facilities Director and branch leadership informed of conditions affecting safety or operations.
  • Maintain accurate work orders, inspection logs, inventory records, and preventive maintenance documentation using the YMCA’s maintenance management system.
  • Safely operate tools and maintenance equipment and follow established procedures for handling, using, and storing chemicals and materials.
  • Monitor building and property security and follow established access, opening, closing, and emergency procedures. Report accidents, incidents, unsafe conditions, and maintenance concerns in accordance with YMCA policies.
  • Work closely with the Facilities Director, Executive Director, and program staff to schedule maintenance activities and minimize disruptions to members and programs.
  • Provide courteous and professional service to members, participants, staff, volunteers, contractors, and visitors while modeling the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
