Accounting Specialist

Detail-driven accountant? Own AP, vendors & fixed assets at the Y in Birmingham.
Job Description

At the YMCA of Greater Birmingham, every reconciled account and on-time payment helps keep our doors open for kids, families, and neighbors across our community. We're for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, and our Accounting team is a big part of how that happens.

We're looking for a detail-driven Accounting Specialist to own the vendor side of our books. You'll run accounts payable, vendor relationships, our fleet fuel program, and fixed assets, with a clear set of recurring deadlines that are yours to own.

Why you'll love it here

  • Health Coverage: Medical, dental, and vision insurance, plus a Flexible Spending Account (FSA).
  • Disability & Life Insurance: Long-term disability (upon eligibility) and company-paid life insurance.
  • Generous Time Off: A very generous PTO plan, 10 paid holidays, 6 weeks of paid FMLA, and 1 week of grandparent leave.
  • Retirement: 403(b) retirement savings plan with a 12% company contribution after 2 years of eligibility.
  • Family-Friendly Perks: Free Y membership, free summer day camp and afterschool care, one free session of summer resident camp, and discounts on childcare programs, youth sports, swim lessons, and more.
  • Professional Development: Educational partnerships offering tuition discounts.
  • A mission you can feel good about every single day

Qualifications

What you bring

You have a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and 1 to 3 years of relevant accounting experience. You're proficient in Excel, you catch the details others miss, and you can juggle multiple deadlines without dropping a ball. You communicate well, build good working relationships, and are just as comfortable working independently as you are on a team.

Essential Functions

What you'll own

  • Vendor Management: Keep vendor records and compliance documents (W-9s, insurance certificates) accurate, and oversee 1099 reporting, related tax filings, and exemptions.
  • Fuel & Credit Card Administration: Run the organization's fleet fuel program and credit card system, including reporting, refunds, and supporting staff.
  • Accounts Payable: Oversee accurate, on-schedule processing of vendor invoices and payments, and find ways to make the AP process better. Reconcile and record month-end accruals and vendor-related entries.
  • Fixed Assets: Maintain fixed asset and capital project records, record depreciation, and reconcile fixed asset accounts during month-end close.
  • Plus: Other duties as assigned to support the department and the organization.

Cause-Driven Leadership Competencies
  • Mission Advancement: Accepts and demonstrates the Y's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Collaboration: Builds positive relationships with branch staff and leadership and communicates clearly and constructively.
  • Operational Effectiveness: Uses data to spot problems, recommend solutions, and follow through on details.
  • Personal Growth: Pursues self-development and stays current on best practices in risk and compliance.
