Job Description

The Director of People & Culture serves as a member of the President/CEO’s senior leadership team, providing strategic leadership to position the Y as an “employer of choice”.  The incumbent oversees the development and implementation of talent management/human resources policies, plans and services including legal compliance, employee benefits, compensation, employee relations, culture and belonging, employment practices and procedures, employee communications and events.  In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greensboro is responsible for carrying out our promise to strengthen the foundations of community with focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility while upholding our values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

1)    Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Continuing Education is required as necessary to stay abreast of changes in relevant state and federal laws.
2)    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from employees, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write detailed correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, employees and/or boards of directors. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, and percent. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. 
3)    Ability to relate effectively to groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. Must demonstrate discretion in matters of utmost confidentiality. Must have significant experience in conflict management. Must have current knowledge and understanding of regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments and applicable laws regarding human resources, and demonstrate proficiency in business and human resources related computer applications.
4)    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.

6)    The noise level is usually moderate.
7)    Certifications: CPR/AED, First Aid, Blood borne pathogen training required after hire and must remain current. Senior human resources certification preferred (SPHR, SHRM-SCP or equivalent); YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1.    Participates in strategic planning for the organization. Provides leadership and consulting support to executives and program directors on matters of reinforcing culture, setting goals, and implementing strategic objectives.
2.    Oversees talent management, including recognition, employee communication and career development.  Partners and collaborates with the VP of Membership and Leadership Development, working collectively on leadership development strategy and programming across the organization.  Assesses and evaluates training needs and develops programs to meet needs.
3.    Develops and maintains performance management and appraisal program. Provides assistance to employees and supervisors with questions and workplace problems.
4.    Oversees compensation, benefits and payroll functions including job description and classification, salary structure and salary adjustments.  Oversees benefit plan communication, enrollment and administration, including benefit billing, reconciliation of payroll deductions and implementation of benefit plan changes.  Provides oversight of payroll administration to ensure accurate and timely processing and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
5.    Remains current with employment laws and regulations. Maintains an effective program of compliance with laws and regulations related to HR and manages relationships with compliance and YMCA legal counsel.
6.    Oversees HR systems and employee records to ensure accuracy and improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the organization.  Ensures timely and accurate submission of HR data requested by all government agencies and Y-USA.
7.    Works directly with assigned committee(s) of the board to build volunteer relationships, develop policies, oversee implementation and meet the related needs of the board.  Participates as a leader or member of staff committees and leadership groups as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises two FT employees and 1 PT employee in the Metro Office, who are responsible for payroll, recruiting, and other human resources functions.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Required Certifications
