Top 5 Ways Mentoring Makes Life Less Stressful – and More Fun – for Teens

Main Body

Every fall, as teens step into a new school year, I’m reminded how much pressure young people carry on their shoulders. Academics, friendships, expectations, identity - it all piles on quickly. At the Y, I’ve seen firsthand how mentorship can transform that stress into confidence and connection.

Here are the top five ways I see mentoring help teens not just get through the school year, but truly thrive:

1. Confidence Boosters

One of my favorite parts of mentoring is watching teens light up when they try something new. Whether we’re shooting hoops, brainstorming a project, or stepping into a leadership role, I get to be the person who says, “You’ve got this.” Those little moments of encouragement add up, and suddenly, teens start believing in their own strength, too.

2. Friendship and Connection

Teens need trusted adults who really listen. I’ve sat across from teens who didn’t think anyone understood them until mentoring gave them a safe space to talk, laugh, vent, and dream. That sense of connection often becomes the foundation for healthier friendships and stronger communication skills.

3. Stress Busters

A lot of mentoring is simply being present. Sometimes we talk through school anxiety or social drama. Other times, we just play a game or take a walk. Either way, that space to breathe and be themselves often makes the weight teens are carrying feel a little lighter.

4. Life Skills in Action

Mentoring isn’t a lecture; it’s hands-on learning. I get to help teens practice teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and leadership in real-life moments. Those skills show up in classrooms, on sports teams, and at home, and teens start navigating challenges with more confidence and clarity.

5. Encouragement to Explore Passions

Some of the biggest breakthroughs happen when teens discover what excites them. I love introducing them to new hobbies, new experiences, or even just a different playlist. Whether we’re cooking together, trying a sport, or diving into a creative project, those shared experiences spark joy and curiosity - and often open doors they didn’t even know existed.

Learning Together

Mentoring isn’t just serious conversations. It’s connection. It’s laughter. It’s learning and growing side by side. And time and time again, I see that teens with mentors feel less stressed, more confident, and more curious about their world.

As the new school year kicks off, mentoring programs at the Y give teens exactly what they need: a place to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically, all while having fun and discovering what makes them them.

Because at its core, mentoring shows teens that support can be meaningful and enjoyable - a powerful combination that helps them step into the year ahead with courage and joy.
