As Director of Finance, you'll be the financial conscience and strategic advisor for our organization. You'll help leaders understand the financial implications of their decisions, find creative solutions to resource challenges, and ensure that every dollar is used effectively to advance our mission. You'll build systems and processes that don't just meet compliance requirements but help people do their work better. You'll translate complex financial concepts into clear insights that empower others to make smart decisions.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, or related field required, , OR equivalent combination of education and experience. MBA, CPA, or CMA preferred.
Experience: Four or more years of substantive experience in accounting and financial management. Expertise in financial analysis, forecasting, and budgeting. Previous experience with voluntary/nonprofit organizations preferred. Experience with investment management and asset allocation preferred. Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations, working with people from all social and socio-economic segments of the community.
Technical Skills: In-depth knowledge of financial regulations, compliance, and internal controls. Knowledge and understanding of general business matters including budget development, financial reporting, cash management, business taxes, banking, and debt financing instruments. Experience with standard business software and office machines. Excellent technology skills specific to computer skills, smartphone, and social media. Knowledge of computer systems, including experience with system selection, new system implementation, and project management.
Leadership and Management Skills: Ability to direct programs through supervision of volunteers and staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, program development, and fundraising. Proven record of accomplishment of developing authentic and deepened relationships with others. Ability to translate complex financial information into clear, actionable insights for non-financial leaders.

Strategic Financial Leadership: Lead the financial planning and analysis (FP&A) process, providing insights and recommendations that enable senior management to make informed, mission-driven decisions. Develop performance indicators and measurement systems for tracking strategic plan objectives, making the abstract concrete and measurable. Work directly with the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors to build relationships, develop policies, and monitor implementation of financial best practices. Evaluate current business models and collaborate with leaders to redesign them when needed, ensuring they better support our mission and impact. Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls that safeguard the YMCA's assets while empowering staff to work effectively and creatively. Direct and supervise activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives.
Communication and Relationship Building: Create and share materials that inform and empower staff and volunteers to understand financial matters and the impact on their work. Maintain good working relationships with auditors, bankers, investment counselors, attorneys, and other professional advisors. Prepare and present financial reports to senior leadership and the Board of Directors that highlight the story behind the numbers and the mission impact they represent. Provide data and reports as required, always with context that helps others understand what the numbers mean.
Daily Financial Operations: Monitor daily and monthly financial operations, ensuring that current accounting standards and legal requirements are met. Guide and support all accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and clarity for the teams who rely on this information. Monitor, assess, review and process payroll and all related payroll items. Partner with staff to ensure procedures are followed and records/reports are accurate, accessible, and actionable for operational decision-making. Manage tax-exempt bond transactions and file all necessary reports. Oversee preparation of reports to YMCA of the USA, governmental agencies, grants, and any other reporting needs related to finances
Budget Development and Management: Oversee the development of the annual operating budget, working closely with operations staff to ensure budgets are well-planned, realistic, and prepared in a timely manner. Develop and control all budgets related to the position and the organization. Execute strategies to equip team members to achieve the Y’s mission while maintaining fiscal responsibility, reinforcing how their work contributes to impact. Prepare analysis and reports that translate complex financial data into clear insights, enabling leaders to make confident, mission-aligned decisions. Give guidance to the President & CEO and staff on issues that affect financial operations.
Compliance and Risk Management: Review, update, and develop internal control systems that protect organizational assets while supporting staff effectiveness and program delivery. Lead internal audits to ensure compliance with policies and standards and provide guidance that strengthens staff understanding and operational performance. Ensure compliance with all state and local licensing and regulations, providing training where needed. Oversee and certify the annual audit, meeting periodically with outside auditors to maintain communications and keep them informed of changes. Oversee preparation of tax returns including IRS Form 990. Complete KX1 data entry to comply with YMCA of the USA requirements. Ensure quality results by monitoring and evaluating effectiveness and adhering to financial standards.
Fundraising Support: Provide leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign, helping others understand the financial impact of their efforts. Support development efforts through accurate financial tracking and reporting.
Team Leadership: Recruit, train, develop, evaluate, recognize, and support staff and volunteers in assigned areas, building accountability while fostering growth, collaboration, and mission-focused outcomes. Ensure staff certifications are current, complete, and filed in Human Resources. Model relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions, demonstrating empathy, collaboration, and trust across teams. Participate in staff meetings and other related meetings. Take a leadership role in the planning and coordination of YMCA events.
Facility Oversight: In conjunction with the Building & Grounds Coordinator, regularly inspect equipment for proper function and schedule repairs in a timely manner.
Professional Development: Continuously grow professional knowledge through self-study, research, and conference/workshop participation, bringing best practices that strengthen the Y’s financial capacity and equity in service delivery.
