CHICAGO (May 7, 2026) - This May, as we recognize National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, we are reminded that the opportunity to live a healthy, active life should be available to everyone, regardless of age, background, ability, or zip code.
Physical activity and sports play a powerful role in strengthening not only individual health, but our communities as a whole. They bring people together, build confidence and resilience, and create spaces where individuals can discover their potential, feel a sense of belonging, and thrive. When access to movement, play, and wellness is available, everyone benefits.
We appreciate the Administration’s recognition of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Its call for Americans to prioritize healthy, active lifestyles reinforces what communities across the country have long known: access to movement and sport is essential to individual well-being and collective strength.
As we celebrate National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and mark this milestone year in the YMCA’s history, we recommit ourselves to a simple but powerful idea: that communities are stronger when everyone has a place to move, connect, and grow. For 175 years, the Y has been that place for millions of people across the country. And together, we’ll continue building healthier, more connected communities for generations to come.
Because there’s no place like this place.
