CHICAGO (June 18, 2026)Summer break can be a double-edged sword. While kids enjoy time off from school, long stretches of unstructured days dominated by screens, boredom, and inactivity can lead to “summer brain drain,” lost social skills, and missed opportunities for growth. Day camps across the country are offering a solution: a structured, fun, and enriching environment that fosters achievement, relationships, and belonging.

“With a growing number of parents concerned about summer screen overload and unstructured time, camps aren’t just fun; they’re essential for healthy childhood development,” said Curtis Lemieux, Director of Youth Development Strategy at YMCA of the USA.

Day camps provide children with opportunities to:

  • Engage in hands-on STEM projects and nature-based learning
  • Build confidence, independence, and teamwork skills
  • Form friendships and develop a sense of achievement and belonging
  • Enjoy safe, active, and screen-free fun

National data points to concerns that make structured summer programs more vital than ever. Children can lose two to three months of math and reading skills over summer without enrichment, and screen time among children has steadily increased, with consequences for physical activity, attention, and social development. Day camps, like those at the YMCA, directly address these challenges while keeping summer engaging and memorable.

“Our campers explore the outdoors, conduct experiments, and work together in ways that build curiosity, confidence, and resilience,” added Lemieux. “Parents tell us they see real growth in their children and have peace of mind knowing their kids are safe, active, and learning.”

Local YMCAs across the country have documented success stories: campers learning to navigate new challenges, discovering a passion for science or art, and building lifelong friendships. These programs highlight the unique value of structured day camps in providing summer enrichment, social connection, and physical activity.

YMCA day camps are active nationwide, serving millions of children and families each summer, and demonstrating that summer experiences can be fun, enriching, and developmental - the antidote to summer boredom.
