Job Description

As a senior leader in the YMCA of Greensboro, the VP of Philanthropy provides strategic leadership across all fundraising channels including annual giving, corporate partnerships, government and foundation grants, endowment and planned giving, special events, and capital/comprehensive campaigns. The VP of Philanthropy is a key leader with the CEO in developing an actively engaged fundraising volunteer board of directors, and in positioning the YMCA as a "charity of choice" for the investment of donations within the local community. The VP of Philanthropy serves as staff liaison to the Board Development Committee, is a key leader in strategic planning, and leads the development and realization of the Y's case for philanthropic support. 

The VP of Philanthropy is responsible for developing and implementing the YMCA of Greensboro’s fundraising strategies and initiatives and will lead the growth of annual campaign contributions to $1MM per year as well as a future capital campaigns. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greensboro is responsible for carrying out our promise to strengthen the foundations of community with focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility while upholding our values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. 

Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent; Master’s degree preferred. Seven or more years of professional experience with a background in fundraising in the YMCA or another non-profit preferred. Track record of success in growing annual fundraising support as well as securing foundation and government grants. Marketing and Communications experience preferred. Working knowledge of giving and charitable vehicles required.
  2. Ability to create interpretive materials to enable potential donors to understand the YMCA and how they contribute to the achievement of its mission. Knowledge of the media and its use in gaining exposure for YMCA events and programs
  3. Demonstrated success in closing major gifts ($50,000+) and leading or playing a senior role in a capital or comprehensive campaign.
  4. Ability to relate to top community leaders and diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. 
  5. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer for extended periods of time and be able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device. The employee frequently is required to sit and reach, and must be able to move around the work environment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. 
Essential Functions
  1. Develops organizational fundraising goals in partnership with the CEO and drives the fundraising plan, strategy, policies and procedures for the Association.
  2. Directs and coordinates association capital development, annual campaign and endowment programs.
  3. Partners with CEO in identifying new initiatives and opportunities designed to increase the donor base.
  4. Actively identifies, cultivates, and solicits major gift prospects.
  5. Ensures systems and resources are in place as needed to carry out the fundraising plans. Establishes and monitors the financial development department budget for the YMCA.
  6. Ensures all gifts and pledges are recorded properly by source and purpose.
  7. Fosters a culture of philanthropy across the YMCA, equipping staff, board, and volunteers to serve as effective ambassadors and fundraisers.
  8. Supervises the Director of Marketing and guides media strategy and key messages that build the Y's image and reputation. Develops communication plans so members, program participants, and the community understand the case for support. 
  9. Supervises and coaches the Development Officer, who leads grants and corporate and foundation partnerships. Sets yearly goals for grant revenue, the partner portfolio, and event sponsorships. Approves which grants to pursue and for which branches, and reviews major proposals and reports before they are submitted. Makes sure grant deadlines, reporting, and funder requirements are met, and joins the Development Officer on key funder visits and relationships.
  10. Develops and implements strategies for corporate sponsorships and partnerships, maximizing opportunities for philanthropic investment and visibility.
  11. Serves as primary staff to Task Forces and Committees and other assigned committees of the Board of Directors focused on fund development and positioning.
  12. Develops strategies to increase volunteer engagement at all levels of financial development.
  13. Represents the association as required by the President & CEO.
  14. Travels throughout the Y’s service area with occasional regional and national travel required.

Required Certifications

CPR/AED and First Aid certification is required upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment. CFRE or equivalent preferred; YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
