Job Description

As the Aquatics Director at the Somerville YMCA you will help support our community and members by ensuring the safe operating and robust programming of our Aquatics facility.  The Aquatics Director is responsible for all aspects of the instructional and recreational aquatics experience. The Somerville YMCA provides swim lessons to youth weekly, offers aqua activities for all ages and has an off-site swim team. 

To thrive in this role, you must have a background of progressive aquatics experience leading to the oversight and management of multiple team members, previous experience maintaining the functions of an aquatics department, and the ability to successfully prioritize and respond to a variety of tasks including the emergency response to members and visitors in the pool. You must have the ability to engage and direct others as well as provide instructions and assessment to staff and members in the pool

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.
  • One to two years related experience preferred (e.g., as an aquatics coordinator or supervisor).
  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Completion of YMCA aquatics training and trainer certifications.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Current certifications in Lifeguarding, Pro CPR, First Aid and swim instructor or willing to obtain.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency of swim skills in accordance with YMCA standards and have a strong foundation in stroke mechanics.
Essential Functions
  • Ensures programs and services meet community needs to include supervising existing program activities, establishing new program activities, and expanding the program within the community as needed. Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Directs and provides hands-on leadership for aquatics programs, including developing and monitoring the program budget to meet fiscal objectives; compiling program statistic to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in program; securing and scheduling the pool facilities; and creating and scheduling the classes, practices and meets.
  • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local, and YMCA health and safety regulations and ensures proper maintenance of pools. Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  • Recruits and hires diverse staff and volunteer teams across multiple dimensions of diversity. On boards and develops them for success. Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Conducts monthly staff aquatic drills and in-service trainings as required by aquatics safety plan.
  • Completes and approves department payroll, schedules, and annual reviews in a timely manner.
  • Develops, maintains, and distributes the pool schedule that meets the needs of member and programs.
  • Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  • Ensures a high level of customer service for all program participants. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Required Certifications
  • Completion of YMCA aquatics training and trainer certifications.
  • Current certifications in Lifeguarding, Pro CPR, First Aid and swim instructor or willing to obtain.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.
