Director of Healthy Living

Responsible for the coordination of all health & wellness classes, activities, services, & signature programs for the Association.
Job Description

The Director of Healthy Living is responsible for independently performing leadership, administrative, and 
supervisory responsibilities and for the coordination of all health and wellness classes, activities, services, 
and signature programs for the Metropolitan Association.

Qualifications

1. Bachelor's Degree in Health Science, Recreation or related field or equivalent in job related experience
required.
2. Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience required.
3. Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in Healthy Living programs (fitness, aquatics, 
chronic diseases, etc.) preferred.
4. Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED.
5. Complete the Precor Self Service Facility Certification within 6 months of hire. 
6. Ability to administer and teach fitness staff trainings.
7. Knowledge of exercise/fitness equipment and function, including the ability to troubleshoot mechanical 
problems.
8. Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology to administer proper exercise programming.
9. Proficient in the use of computers and willingness to further develop computer skills.
10. Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with, diverse populations.

Essential Functions

1. Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA 
objectives.
2. Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews 
and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
3. Direct oversight of all Healthy Living Department staff, including the Helen G. Nassif YMCA Wellness 
Center Coordinator and Prairie Summit YMCA Wellness Center Coordinator. 
4. Manages group exercise staff, schedules, and program releases for the Cedar Rapids Metro YMCA’s.
5. Establishes new program activities and expands programs in accordance with strategic and operating 
plans.
6. Promotes, sells, and educates staff, members and community participants on the benefits of 
participating in key healthy living programs to maximize revenue potential and increase member 
retention.
7. Develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
8. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member
and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
9. Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation 
in programs.
10. Monitors equipment at all facilities and recommends purchase and or repair as needed.
11. Monitors daily operations to adhere to all YMCA health and safety standards and policies.
12. Attends monthly staff meetings for the Marion YMCA and the Association. 
13. Oversees the administration of the YMCA’s signature programs.
